Doozergirl: "And more of a budget again I'd pick what John Lewis sell which is normally sold under the Wentworth brands for less money by independents. I can't imagine wanting to spend more than that on a kitchen really as I'd still like to change it after a few years for the sake of it. But I've never stayed anywhere long enough to ever think about changing!"
Hi Doozergirl, can I confirm you are saying that John Lewis sell Wentworth kitchens but that these kitchens are cheaper when bought from one of Wentworth's independent suppliers??
Thanks for the rigid vs flat pack comment - yes, that's another common theme through these threads as far as an indicator of quality. We are keen on good quality carcasses so that we do have the option of just changing the doors if they get shabby or become dated.
Apologies to OP if I am asking questions on their thread but hopefully they are directly related to the question.0 -
Abanker :
We have been going through the new kitchen process.
We had several preferences, a specific modern look, a defined layout, and also to preferably use a local supplier.
We are consistent in using local for the extension build, electrical work, heating etc etc.
We identified a number of suppliers offering a modern kitchen all using a door made in a factory less than 10 miles from us. The difference between the furniture+fitting cost between highest and lowest was literally several thousand pounds !
I guess my point is 'do not dismiss the local independents'.
They can sometimes find ways of helping you achieve a budget. By comparison, I found visiting the sheds quite prescriptive, and their method of sale offers tends to lead you down a specific path.0 -

Yes and should be! Get the quotes and find out, but the independent would be keen to beat JL's price.
I have a JL "Colour Collection" kitchen which is the "Cucina Colore" elsewhere, one of the Wentworth brands.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Thanks Kabayiri and Doozergirl.
I was thinking of a 'shed' as my starting point to get the plans drawn up as I was after a slightly different layout to what's in there now. I can then use this to compare prices. (I do feel bad about using them like this but I suppose that's the way of the world). Is this a good plan??0 -
We had a lot of quotes from the big companies but the designs were all so basic - you had to fit the kitchen as per the units available. We got in a local joiner who was actually cheaper than Magnet and he had built ours and then hand painted them.0

I am having a new kitchen fitted. Work will start on the 25th July although my fitter will start to prepare the kitchen removing the tiles next Thursday
He has quoted me a daily rate of £180 and reckons it will take 5 days to complete.
I am replacing the doors new work surface sink fridge and tiles on both floor and wall cooker hood.
I thought that 5 days was a lot given that I have had a new kitchen replaced in 3-4 days.
He offered to do the work on an hourly rate of £20 but my Daughter says not to do this. I am a widowed pensioner so not young and worried about everything.
I do trust my fitter as he has done work for me in the past including fitting my Intoto kitchen some years ago. He is an excellent and I would rather he did the work than anyone else. I have settled for Howdens at the end of the day as Magnet could not even get a quote correct!
I am opting for a high gloss white look. Quote for the work to include the above but not the tiles £2400 Labour £900 Tiler £450 Elec £160 est Plumber £120 etc and not including any parts, I am now changing the floor tiles so that will add at least another £500 I reckon. It is a small kitchen and I don't know what Howdens charge is.
Magnet then had quoted me for this included but without any labour charge or tiles. £1850 My Joiner gave me the whole invoice and I was shocked at how little things cost when they take off 50% 70% 80% eg door handles 16 @ £6 then 80% leaving £19.60 My Joiner said he would do it with just labour costs. I have assked him to see if Howden would do anything with the price. The Joiner took 10% off the units etc
I would appreciate your advice on this

Another question I would like to put glass tiles on my splashback Cooker hob and behind the sink and do an upstand the remainder of the way.
Glass tiles Kula seems to be about £5 per tile 30mmX 3mm
Glass mosiac are around £120-£190 per sq meter. I have gone to Topps Tiles and to a local Builder and supplier where I have bought tiles in the past.
At TT the man was saying you don't want those they are too expensive! I don't need a great deal so the cost is not too bad. Wondered if anyone has any idea where else I might try. I live in Harrogate don't drive so am a bit stuck. Just scared of making an expensive mistake.

Have a look at diy-kitchens.co.uk. Second Nature doors and in house built carcasses. Well priced and every bit as good as Mereyway imo.0
