Windows XP constant updates

Options
For the last week, every time I switch off my computer, 2/3 times per day, there has been an update. Is this happening to other XP users?

If you go to windows update and click installed updates, are there any failed updates?

If you run check for updates and install them from there, does the PC shut down without mentioning updates?

I've seen it before with Microsoft updates. Make a note of the KB...... number relating to the update that keeps repeating. Microsoft will probably have released a fix to fix the update you didn't particularly want. :)

If you have n't used that machine online for a while you are probably catching up with last month's "Patch Tuesday" updates, there were a lot of 'em! This month's (Today) is a tiddler by comparison

^Is this online or on my computer?

Using system restore I have found there has been an average of three updates per day on my computer from April 21-30 and again from May 1-10

Problem is this, Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB2526954) failing. I uninstalled silverlight after having problems copying music CD's. Cannot remember exactly why, or if it made a difference.

If you are not going to use silverlight then you could go to windows update, run check for updates, click review, left click the silverlight update, then right click it, click hide update.

It should not be finding updates for programmes which are not installed, did you use add and remove to uninstall it?

left click the silverlight update, then right click it, click hide update.
This opened another window, right click had no option to hide update.

Add remove programmes shows silverlight but attempts to uninstall it shows message "Patch package could not be opened, verify it exists". New version of silverlght cannot be installed over old version.

I clicked custom install for updates and unticked install update for silverlight, hopefully this will work.

Apologies, wasn't on an XP machine, if you click the + for an update, there should be a don't show this again box to tick

I ticked no thanks to the update and ticked the dont show again box. When I shut down this morning no updates. Yay, until the next time windows decides I need something. From memory, silverlight and disc copying problems are the reason I started investigating ubunto.
    Thanks for your help.
