Buying new car - how much can I negotiate?

I'm thinking of buying a new VolksWagen and want my hard-earned £££s to buy as much as possible. My question is will I get different offers from two different VW dealers, or are they all limited in the amount of discount/extras they can offer? (I do have a VW to part-exchange, but it's not in fantastic shape although I have had it from new).
I'd really like to hear from people who work for main dealers or those who have successfully negotiated the deal of their dreams from a main dealer!
Any input gladly received. Thanks!

To get as much VW for your money a possible it needs a Skoda badge on the front!
What car website will give you a target price for you to aim at, if you cant match that locally then they will tell you where you, it's quite often a broker.
Brokers such as drive the deal and car file source cars from main dealers you pay the broker nothing get the direct from the dealer the broker gets a commission from the dealer.
The only slight complication is your part x.0 -
Sounds like a plan, MX5! I don't mind doing a bit of work to get a good deal. Thanks!0

Remember that the true cost is not what you pay for the new car or how much you get for the part exchange but the cost to do the deal.
Go through the online brokers such as coast2coast, driver the deal, broadspeed, and others to see what you can get. Don't forget options and make sure you compare like with like exactly. There is one online one where they bid down - can't remember their name.0 -
I would definately have a look at Dealdrivers and Drivethedeal for some quotes. The discounts vary by manufacturer, but i saved about £5k on my new 1.6 tdci fiesta purchasing from dealdrivers. If you want lots of specific extras you will save even if it is custom made for you, but they often also have a list of "available now" cars, which if they suit your needs, you get an even better and quick deal on.
Mine was one of those, right model, right spec, and acceptable colour, not a pre-reg (beware of those) and so it meant no 2-3 month waiting period to get it.

Thanks Kira - good advice. Could you clarify what you mean by "not a pre-reg (beware of those)"?0

If you buy prereg you are not the first owner, not normally an issue, but if you were unlucky enough to be in an accident in the first 12months then your Insurance would buy you a brand new equivalent vehicle, but only if you are the first registered keeper, ptherwise you need to negotiate, I know a bloke that had his prereg written off at 11 months after purchase and he had to add in £2000 to get an equivalent car on the road, not good.
However you have to consider the savings against this small disadvantage.
As far as saving money on a VW, as said buy a Skoda, they have good residuals and are as well if not better built in some cases.
They now come with the latest engines and DSG gearboxes.
I would never buy a VW, they are very overpriced, though residuals are good, but only because of a preceived brand reputation.
I have also been told that VW dealers are very reluctant to give discounts, as mentioned many have good results from DrivetheDeal or similar.0 -

Bigjl says most of it. Also you need to be aware that most of the time, the warranty on a new car starts at first reg, so if your car has already been registered for months, you have lost part of the warranty. Of course, you could try to negotiate with the dealer for them to offer an extended warranty, but they may just say that is the price of a big discount.
Alot of the online brokers will do new cars in a way that pre-reg's them, so worth checking it with them. The good thing about Dealdrivers (and i believe drive the deal as well), is that the cars are first reg to you, direct from a dealership and they are just middle men, who hook you up with the dealership at a set price, and get paid by the dealership for the volume of referalls. I've bought new direct with haggling, and via DD, with similar results discount wise (i haggle very very hard and go in very well prepared and armed!), but tbh, it was a relief not to have to spend the 4-5 hours arguing about the price to get the result!Married 13/03/10 #1 DD born 13/01/12!!
