Mattress Help

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can give me some helpful advice with my wee problem....

About 2 years ago, I bought a mattress from Bensons for Beds which was decent enough, but started to get major "settlement" where myself and my partner slept.
This got worse and worse until I got in contact with the company to complain.
To cut a long story short, they eventually replaced the mattress (success!), with a like-for-like.

So, for the last 11 months or so, I have had the same style mattress on my bed frame, but it, too, has developed the major "settlement" where we sleep.

I have contacted the company again about this, but they say that the mattress is out of guarantee, so they cant / wont do anything to help.

As I paid over £400 for the mattress (original price was over £900, I purchased it in a sale), I am fairly hacked off that this has happened again - plenty of back pain because of the mattress!

Can anyone give me some advice as to where I stand with this - as this is now about a replacement mattress and not the original, even though it still breaches the sales of goods act (not fit for purpose, not lasting a reasonable length of time, etc).

Hope you can help.

Cheers.

I can't really help with your rights, but what mattress is it you have exactly, and what base is it on?

Could the problem be you have the wrong type of mattress? For example they say if you're heavy you need a firmer mattress. Or certain beds are only suitable for solid base bed frames, not spring loaded ones or ones with slats for example.

Does sound like it's just a bit naff though :(

Do you 'turn' your mattress to even out any settlement and wear?

    Found this:

    Hi guys,

    Thanks for the replies.

PledgeX - The frame the mattress is on should be fine - when I purchased the first mattress, I explained what type of frame it was and the sales woman assured that it would be fine.

Dippypud - Due to the type of mattress it is (cant get a link at the mo, but its the type where is looks like it's got a cushion over the top, if you know what i mean?), the mattress can only be turned....i.e basically means that where myself and my partner sleep is virtually the same when it's turned round.
It cannot be flipped over, due to they type of mattress it is (would negate the whole point of the cushion top part)

Sounds like it is a pillow top mattress. What you are describing actually sounds quite common. There are a number of threads on here where pillow top mattresses get a real slating for the very problem that you describe.

I would contact trading standards to see how you stand, as any mattress worth that much should be expected to last many years. Yet you have now had two that didn't last two years each.

    What make is the mattress?

It's a Sealy mattress and, yeah, it is a pillow topped one.

Originally, the mattress I have was listed at over £900, so yeah, it should last a heck of a lot longer than 11 or so months!

I'll give trading standards a shout and see if they can help any more than Bensons have - who have been next to no help at all!

My wife is also a larger lady and her size does take it's toll on our mattress's. Not to worry more to hug I alway's tell her!!

There has been a lot of tossing and turning in the mattress industry lately.

Silentnight plc which sells bed's and mattress's under several different name's including Sealy's folded virtually overnight.

Not sure if that will effect you with your Benson's bed??

It wasn't overnight. This has been going on for a few months. As the report says they have been bought out. I personally wouldn't touch one of their products anyway.
