There are agencies who will trace ownership of land -- for a fee, of course. If the OP wanted to spend the money, and if the search was successful (which seems quite likely, if it was previously BR land), the OP could make an offer to the owner. In this position - as the squatters are proving a problem to the other would-be squatters iyswim:cool: - well actually I would be out to take all possible legal action to find out who the owner is if I were the second set of would-be squatters (ie the houseowners).
Having done that - then I would lodge an official notification or make an offer to buy it from the owner (depending on whether I could find out who the owner is). Having acquired the land one way or another - my purpose in owning it would be just to treat it as a garden extension or leave it as "wild land" - but, either way, it would be under my control and would be kept in good order. One of the reasons I would be interested in acquiring the land would be precisely in order to ensure that no developer could get their hands on it:D0 -
