Please help my acer netbook has the black screen of death

My netbook acer aspire 1 series netbook wont work when I turn it on. The acer screen comes on then it just goes to a black screen with a flashing white cursor, and wont load Windows XP.
I have tried safe mode, and it wont work, I have tried taking the battery out and it wont work.
Anyone have any ideas, I am really at a loss

does the safe mode menu come up with F8?!!

Hi no memory stick, or usb in, and I just tried the F8 button and holding down power button and no nothing, just still get the black sceen with the white cursor.
