Camcorders

I bought the Kodak Zi8 HD camera at Christmas without fully understanding what makes a good camcorder. It has been faulty so has been returned. I wasn't happy with the image quality of the camera, so popped into Currys for a chat with the video type people.

They suggested:

• hard drive instead of memory card
• that I didn't need a HD camcorder because unless I had a blu-ray burner, the quality of the video would be the same as non-HD
• Panasonic are the best

I kind of feel if I'm about to invest £300 on a camcorder (he suggested Panasonic SDR-H101) that I might as well go the rest and get a HD,because inevitably, blu-ray burners will be standard in computers soon enough. However, the HD camcorders in there were £600+

Any thoughts on hard drive instead of memory card? I like the idea that the memory card could go straight into the front of the Playstation and play in HD.

I also have no idea of what this 1080p means.

Can anyone help? I have tried to do as much research as possible, but would be glad of some advice.

We want it in the near future for filming scenery and in the distant future for kids birthdays, days out etc.
