I am a lone parent with 2 children. Currently I recieve child benefit, child tax credit, income support and council tax benefit.
I have been offered a job working in a school in September. My hourly rate and exact hours are still to be confirmed as the headteacher is deciding who will be assigned which role. I volunteer there currently.
I had a work focused interview at the job centre today and the advisor worked out a rough 'better off calculation' for me.
She emphasised the importance of trying to secure at least 16 hours a week with the school, which I am trying to do.
She told me that I would still recieve my child benefit and child tax credits. If I work over 16 hours I would also be entitled to working tax credit. I thought you recieved one or the other type of tax credits not both, the advisor said many people say this to her. Is it right that you get both types of tax credit if on a low wage and working 16+ hours.
This must seem like a silly question but I have read many times on here about people being misinformed about things and just want to be careful.
Many thanks in advance for your help.
