urgent request re movers

hopefully moving end of next week and was wondering if anyone could recommend a removal firm based in Central London

not neccasarily looking for the cheapest I can find as I went that route last move and it ended up being a real false economy........ A guy in his late 50's turned up, told me he'd hurt his foot the previous day and 'wouldn't be much help today' especially as he was retiring the following day and this was his last removals job ever. His colleague was a heavily overweight 18 year old who dissapeared to take a call on his mobile for over an hour whilst I was forced to start carrying things to their vehicle. He returned after his break and openly smoked a joint whilst half heartedly shuffling a few things around.

In any other situation I would have simply sent them home but the removals firm told me this was their only 'team' available so I was really stuck with them and don't want a repeat of that:mad:

anyway, any recommendations very greatfully recieved........

    hiya

I cant recommend anyone yet TBH but im in the same boat really

We have the contents of a 1 bed flat, going 15 mins up the road and I was quoted 670 plus vat.

I cant afford this so gonna ghave to go the cheap gumtree way I reckon.

Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • I moved last weekend from SE1 to SW14 and used A2B Minimoves-they came up when I tried to get some quotes from reallymoving.com. Couldnt find a website for them, which initially made me a little wary.

They charged £75+VAT per hour for 3 men and a 4 ton lorry-total cost for moving was around £400, which was way cheaper than the other quotes that i got.

What really impressed me was the team that they sent-removal men I have used before have always given the impression of being a bit fed up whenever anything wasn't perfectly lined up for them (i.e. they had to walk up some stairs/not everything was boxed up). These guys however were great-no complaints, super fast. Best of all, our sofas would not fit through the front door, so they had to lift them up through the dining room window with ropes (3 floors!)-this they did without any complaints and they were extremely proactive about the whole thing.

In the end, was so impressed by the price and service, we tipped them £150 quid for their work (in comparison, have never tipped any removal men previously)

  • I think their base was E1 or somewhere round there (based upon my brief review of the invoice) so think they should

Make sure you get a firm in the British Association of Removers (BAR), then you have some recourse if things go wrong.

Anyone can set themselves up as a removal firm.

I've heard of firms with no insurance, firms that never show up, firms that smash up your stuff etc. etc.

It's your whole life going onto a lorry - you want to make sure you know that the firm is reputable.

I was told you can get a variation notice on your contents insurance to insure your goods in transit- anyone know anything about this

As if my contetns insurer will cover it I cant see any practical reason why I couldnt use a cheapie firm

But will that insurance cover you if your remover doesn't turn up and you have to try and find someone else on the day, possibly incurring costs as the person moving into your home cannot move in.
