STRAY DOGS - Local Council's Obligations

This 'respondent' was actually trying to help you. So thanks for that!0

Someone I know in my village found a stray dog, so she called the council (or someone like that, not entirely sure) and meanwhile - since she had dogs herself - she gave the dog some food, anyway when the people came out about the dog, they said that since she'd fed it, she had to keep it until they found an owner. Apparantly if you find a dog and they think you've 'taken it in' - either fed it, or gave it blankets or whatever - they can refuse to take it off you and you have to keep it until it's owner is found, and if the owners not found, its yours forever more...0

The person you know has been told absolute lies there I'm afraid. Total load of rubbish. Might have been the RSPCA that they contacted, if there's no telly camera there, they usually don't want to know.0 -

Sorry, vixki. Either you're the victim of an urban myth. Or, as alfiesmum surmises, you've been told a pack of lies. Acting in the best interests of a lost or distressed animal does not make anyone responsible for its ownership.
I would hope that ludicrous urban myths of this particular type are nipped in the bud at source rather than allowed to gain wider circulation -- and wider credence.0 -
How it used to work some years ago was that tenders were offered to local boarding kennels to take in stray dogs. Local RSPCAs were also invited to tender too. The 7 day period was to allow for owners to reclaim their dogs and after that it then becomes a commercial decision as to whether kennels could keep the dogs alive or not. Boarding kennels with stray contracts had to keep those kennels separate from their usual boarding areas to prevent the spread of potential diseases.
It's a sad fact that these kennels cannot keep all dogs forever as they would very quickly go out of business. Rescue centres take up as much as they can, but they rely on donations. So, if your dog is to be kept as a pet, please please get him or her neutered.0 -

Well it's certainly not an 'urban myth' as I know the person it happened to. Basically nobody would take the dog... I guess probably, the shelters were full or something and they decided that since the dog had been fed, they were capable of looking after it.
But certainly, nobody would take the dog off them.0 -
So the person you know has told you they definitely rang the council (or who ever), told them about a stray dog, and the council (or who ever) came out to her house and said 'have you fed it?' and your friend says 'yes' and the council say 'well now it's your dog we can't take it'....
H....E...R......N this ones for you, you're way better at responding to stuff like this.)

You really are contentious, Alfiesmum! This person, for one reason or another, believes what she's been told, and there you go again getting sniffy and sarcastic, under the guise of being 'helpful'. You need to learn some people skills - not exactly difficult, since you're sitting there typing and can read it back before hitting 'submit'. It isn't like it comes into your head and uncontrollably pops straight out of your mouth now is it?
The submit matter may well be a pack of lies and a cliched 'urban myth', but making someone look and feel stupid isn't very nice now is it?0 -

It's a bit rude to say she looks stupid. I didn't say that at all. And I don't see anywhere where I've claimed my post to be 'helpful' either. No wonder they all avoid you at the school gates is it - now I know why.Maybe you should think before you hit submit....
Oh and I have Noo idea what 'submit matter' means, so can't comment on that one.0
