    There is actually no specified "law" regarding this, but to add on to what is said above, in BS7671:2008, regulations 132.5.1 and 512.2.1 refer to equipment and accessories being suitable for the environment that they are being used in. Also the IEE Guidance Note 1 on Selection and Erection, it states a recommended "safe" distance of 300mm
    If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

    I doubt it is as dangerous as most people seem to think. The hob is most likely designed to be resistant to water ingress into the control knobs or else something as innocuous as a pan boiling over could cause a hazard.
