Read post number 8 - you want the name servers to be automatic. Already gave you a picture! What more do you need?

NOD32 is fine, but you'll get a slight improvement using Avast (http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/performance/performance_dec_2010.pdf). Personally I'd trim other parts of your computer, as despite this NOD32 is a more effective antivirus than Avast particularly for its heuristics in finding unknown viruses.0 -
You are right. I had changed that with control panel, but not in the browser. Done that now.
Still one more, probably unrelated problem. Sometimes on booting up the screen stays blank and the only way to resolve this is to force a shut down (by holding power button in) and then try booting up again after a few seconds. Also blanks out occasionally when going into powersave mode, and then refuses to come back to life (this is intermittent). Is this a video card problem or something else?
Thanks again.0 -
Double check the TCP/IP settings of all adaptors - including the ethernet/network 'Local Area Connection' even if you just use wireless, and vice versa. Redo a hijackthis log just to be sure, feel free to post it.
May as well stick a malware blocking hosts file in there while you're at it:

Do you mean after the boot process, or that you never get a picture?0 -
No picture right from start of the boot process.
Laptop or desktop PC?
In that case you'll have to troubleshoot everything from the monitor, to the cable, video card, as well as how well components are seated. More tricky since it's intermittent. Might also be a bios issue.
Also listen to what sounds are produced when it happens, and look in the motherboard manual for what errors they correspond with (or search on the internet based on your bios type e.g. "award bios beep codes").0 -
Desktop. Just left it on overnight to run Malwarebytes. Screen went blank. Couldnt get it back. Turning on and off failed several times. One time I got blue and white vertical lines on the screen. In those failed startups, computer attempted to read CD drive but didn't appear to be any action on the HD. Monitor is fine if plugged into my netbook so that rules out monitor and cable.
I'll have to try listening to the BIOS :think:0 -
have you cleaned (as in physically) the inside of the desktop, might not help with the graphics problem but always a good thing to do to get rid of the dust build up which can end up causing overheating problems. as well as this when you are inside the system check that all the cables are in tightly, especially thinking about the graphics card if it is a dedicated one as a lot of them require further power than the slots can provide and a loose cable could be causing it problems. if its intergrated of course this will not be the issue and will have to look into other possibilitiesDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
Cleaned inside and checked all cables and cards well seated. Blank screen problem seems more frequent now. No beeps from the BIOS before it freezes, so no clues there.0

is it a descrete graphics card (agp or pice) or a intergrated chipset?Drop a brand challenge

It's a discrete PCI card (nvidia). I tried disabling it and connecting the monitor to the integrated card, but could not work out how to get it to work.0
