I'm trying to dial a hotel in Florida. I dial 0844 431 2041 then 001 the the 1800 number but nothing happens. When I dial 001 and 800 (then the rest) and drop the '1' it goes through but I get a message saying I will be charged a standard rate for the call by an american women message thing.

It says I can use the number 24 hours a day. Is there a better dialabroad number?

001800 is correct, and it sounds like the call is actually working

The announcement is standard for calls from outside the USA. Ignore it and the call will connect at your provider's tariff

I dialled a USA 1800 number a couple of times last month via 18185.

I didn't hear the message you mention but was charged (and expected to be charged) at the standard rate for calling a geographical number in the USA via 18185 (0.5p/minute) rather than it being a free call.
