Make First Direct donate to Shelter on your behalf ...

If you take out home insurance with FD during the month of December, they will make a donation of £10 on your behalf.

Remember to cancel it immediately, so that you don't incur any fees.
What a wonderful way to tick off First Direct, whilst simultaneously donating to a worthwhile charity.

Kind of ironic that First Direct are supporting a charity for the homeless, whilst penalising the poorest members of society who want to operate a bank account by charging them £10 per month

My reading of the T's & C's is that you need to hold the insurance for 8 weeks before any payment is made. Obviously you will be making payments in that time.
I also note you didn't mention the cashback. Added bonus perhaps where you can then donate more money to Shelter? If you are at a poker game and you cannot figure out who is the patsy then guess what...you're the patsy - Warren Buffet0 -

Hi LR
The Ts&Cs state:
"The cashback will be fulfilled within 8 weeks of purchasing the Home Insurance policy but only if the Home Insurance policy has not been cancelled in the meantime. "
So it doesn't actually stipulate that you need to hold the insurance for 8 wks to trigger the donation to Shelter.
Hope this helps0 -

Sorry, but I think this is a stupid and idiotic thing to do.
Its likely to have been behaviour like that - where First Direct were paying £50/100 for each new customers to join them - only for these customers not to use the accounts at all (they probably didnt even 'trial' the service) which caused FD to react as they did in the first place.
Now you want to encourage people to do something similar and all that will happen is that FD will pull the offer and then Shelter will be the ones to suffer in the long term.Kind of ironic that First Direct are supporting a charity for the homeless, whilst penalising the poorest members of society who want to operate a bank account by charging them £10 per month
Which people can easily get around (i.e. have a savings account or credit card) and to be honest I doubt FD customers are or were the "poorest members of society" - those are the ones without any bank accounts at all..

Great, well thought out advice there Sunil - advise people who are probably already on low incomes or have poor credit to get an easy and tempting means of getting more into debt (ie a credit card) all in order to retain a bank account. Yeah, makes perfect sense to me, what next?, free Thresher Vouchers for alcoholics?0 -
In my experience, it is a big mistake to assume that just because people are on low incomes that they are unable to manage their finances or handle credit cards etc.
This is because those on low incomes tend to have a much better idea of how much they are spending and where
In fact, its often those who appear more well off who have debt problems or pay interest etc.
