Travel insurance recommendations...

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for recommendations on travel insurance - based not solely on price but on how good the company actually are if you need to make a claim. I've been trawling the net and found this site:
http://www.uk-insurance-index.co.uk/travel-insurance-reviews-1.html

There are 49 reviews on there. There are only 2 reviews where people have made claims and still recommend the company. Sadly these are both companies for the over 50s and I'm not old enough yet!

Apart from this being a rather damning indictment of the travel insurance business does anyone have any recommendations of companies that deal reasonably with claimants?

many thanks,
TigerSue

Do bear in mind that people are more likely to bother to leave a review if they have an axe to grind.

Can anyone recommend annual travel insurance for two people aged between 49 to 58 for travel within Europe who have elderly parents not travelling with them but who may get suddenly ill/deteriorate and cause the holiday to be cancelled or curtailed ? All the companies so far have restrictions that the relatives must not have been in hospital in the last six months which is not realistic when talking about 80 year olds

    Have you tried Saga ?
  • I recommend Boots Travel Insurance. I have an annual family policy. I am not sure how the price compares ... I get it for two reasons (1) because it covers me for medical conditions at very little extra cost, whereas most policies want nearly double. (2) I have made two claims - one for volcanic ash (they actually wrote TO ME inviting me to claim!) and for lost items - paid out with very little kerfuffle. And you get advantage points ...

    Hi

AXA has a bad reputation when it comes to paying out. They try every trick in the book to stall i.e lose paperwork, deny ever receiving it....on and on, and God help you if you are taken ill in the USA.

I can't make any recommendations of good insurers, but I would urge everyone to give AXA a miss.

I'll 2nd Boots but add Flexicover (use code EC511 for a discount too) My husband has pre-existing conditions and they are the best, we buy annual worldwide inc USA and have had to claim too as my daughter decided to be born 5 weeks early whilst in the US! They were fine and we have found that both of these companies and no doubt others use the same handling centre!

    Hope that helps

This is a good point and one I'm aware of on the basis that I have a bit of an axe to grind myself! However, I've spent quite a lot of time searching for recommendations online for people who have made claims and found only four companies ... five now with Boots (who I will definitely check out - thanks Curlywurly and Lil.Smartie).

Robcmar - two recommendations I got were for Saga and Staysure who both specialise in the over 50s. I don't know what their prices are but I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that if someone is happy with their insurance after they've made a claim they must be among the best of a bad bunch.

The other two recomendations I've had were Fortis (now Ageas) and Natwest, although you can't buy either online.

Finally I had an awful experience with Insure and Go and judging from the number of bad reviews I've seen of them they are best avoided at all costs.

    Thanks all
    :)
