Advice please re next door's doors

Hi. We have students living next door and last summer the landlord did a lot of work on the house including we assume putting new internal doors in, I say assume as we never had this problem before this. Since then whenever the students let the doors slam we can actually feel it in our house not just hear it, ie the floorboards shudder. My question is, is this doing any damage to our house or are we being particularly sensitive and if it is the former, what can we do about it? Many thanks

This would annoy the hell out of me too, but I suspect you are being a little over-sensitive. Houses can withstand a lot more than that - we had major building work going on a few meters from our old house which caused massive vibrations and shaking of the building on a regular basis but we were assured it was fine by safety inspectors and I have it on good authority that the house is still standing.

I'm guessing you're just not mad keen on your neighbours. I do sympathise as I'm finding it hard to tolerate my neighbours bratty kids, but ultimately it's my problem. Most students are approachable enough though in my experience. Why not have a word?

If its a HMO wont the internal doors have to be fire doors . My grandma used to have a fire door in her council bungalow and it slammed shut every time you went through it .

In the first instance I would ask the students to be considerate when closing the doors. If the problem continues speak to the landlord and ask him to sort it out because you find the door slamming an annoying problem. Could he fit dampeners or slow closing devices on the doors?

  • Thanks, yes I think they must be fire doors because of the noise. Unfortunately neither the students or the landlord are approachable so hence me asking on here for advice as to what to do.
