where's best buy for spirits (vodka, gin, jd, baileys, etc)?

hiya

i am hoping that my memory serves me right and that last year asda (i think) did 2 x 1 litres of spirits for £20 before xmas.

this year everywhere seems to be doing 2 x 1 litres of gordons gin/smirnoff vodka/baileys/bells whiskey for 2 for £25 all running until the new year.

i'm trying to get bottles in the xmas deals ahead of my wedding next year to save as much as i can. does anyone know if any supermarkets are doing 2 for £20 on litres (not 70cl bottles)?? or if any plan to before xmas?

(if not i think my plan will be to buy them from tesco online with my tesco credit card (double points) and use one of the vouchers for £10 worth of clubcard vouchers (equalling £40 worth of deals vouchers) if you spend over £100 and so i'll get 8 litres of spirits for £90 effectively).

i also need to buy the following which aren't on the good deals offers (i want the proper brands, not fakey's as we don't mind them but family snobs will be at the wedding.....):

jack daniels
barcardi
pernot
southern comfort
malibu
peach schnapps
tia maria
sambuca
cocktail stuff - cassis, blue curacua, triple sec, margarita mix etc

does anyone know the best deals that are out at the moment? i drive out n about with my job so can nip in places, don't mind scouting around etc.

i'm going to get beer, juices, soft drinks, mixers etc next summer in the summer bbq etc deals as it doesn't have long enough sell by dates at the moment.

i've already got my wine from fab deals at virgin wines (got 60 v good bottles for £140 ish) and my champagne from fab deal at tesco £20 per bottle of veuve cliqeuot. managed to get 1 litre of harveys bristol cream for £3.74 at recent tesco deal and litre of pimms for £9.69 at somerfield. so i'm doing okay so far. :T

we just really need some money saving help with the main spirits deals and the list of more unusual spirits.

cheers, claire

  • hi

yes ha ha i do intend for people to have a good time at the wedding and expect lots of hangovers :-)

fortunately the venue i am having the main wedding at does not have a drinks licence so i will get all the wedding drinks for 2 days stay in for under £400 - not bad eh!

the voucher for thresher is purely for wine and champagne so unfortunately i can't use it for spirits.

    cheers, claire

or drive down to Dover - ferry, shop, ferry...

Other than that, just keep your eyes open - all the supermarkets are into cheap booze to drag people in - eg litre of Teachers £10.99 in Sainsbury last weekend. For stuff like white rum and vodka, the "own brands" are more than adequate unless you drink the stuff neat. Also cheack out some of the Netto/Aldi/Lidl threads - most of them have reasonable alternatives to "name brands".

Hi Claire, good luck with finding a deal on Jack Daniels, I think myself and many other MSEers have been looking for the same thing!
In the supermarkets the cheapest I have seen Jack Daniels is £15.48 for 70cl from Asda.
It costs £15.69 in Sainsburys but if you buy 6 bottles of alcohol there then you save 5% so that brings the price down to £14.90 a bottle. (£15.69 x 6 minus the 5%)
Good for people like you who need to buy in bulk for a special occasion.

    Sainsburys
Smirnoff Vodka, Barcardi, Baileys, Bells Scotch Whiskey and Gordon's Gin is all on 2 for £25. These are all 1 litre bottles. Again if you are buying 6 then you will get an additional 5% off so it would cost you £75 for 6 bottles, minus the 5% which makes it £71.25 so it costs £11.88 for each of your 1 litre bottles as long as you buy them in sixes.

Malibu and Southern Comfort is currently £13.49 for a litre bottle. For 6 is £80.94 so minus your 5% when you buy 6 this makes it £76.89 which works out at £12.82 a bottle.

Tia Maria is £12.99 for a litre bottle. £77.94 for 6 minus your 5% makes it £74.04 so £12.34 a bottle.

Now my maths isn't the best so you would need to double check my working out!

I know that Sainsburys give you 5% off when you buy 6 bottles but I think Tesco do the same so it probably work out cheaper if you go there. I rarely shop at Tesco so I don't know their prices.

    Hope this helps!:)
  • thanks for this info

i've looked up the prices for tesco - so i'll compare with the sainsbury's prices and see what works out best

i don't think any supermarket is doing 2 litres for £20 this year so i'll pay the 2 litres for £25 in the deals.

you are probably right that tesco will work out cheapest - especially if i use the £10 worth of clubcard vouchers (ie: £40 worth of deals) if you spend over certain amounts, even after taking off the £3.99 delivery charges!

tesco has 70cl of JD on at £15.47 - i think thats the cheapest going

    thanks again all

This thread might be some use for you :)

Have you thought of ringing up a supermarket and mentioning that you want to spend £400 [or however much] for a wedding on just booze with them and ask if they can help you out with any special offers?
  • aldi are doin jd for 15.48 ish but i buy mine from the smaller shops, got 6 bottles from local indian corner shop for my wedding and he did them at 14 quid a bottle as we wanted a few, they are usually willing to barter lol, failing that get on the eurotunnel and get it, we save loads on a trip to france and do so 3 times a year or more, dont get it from the terminal go to the warehouses its only a short drive and a great day out!:T
