it looks more complicated than it is, doing

uninstall adaware, uninstall mcafee, install avast 6 free version, and fix the o4s I mentioned (start, run, msconfig) first.

should result in a speedier more responsive system fairly quickly

a wired/wireless router is far more secure than a usb adsl modem, doesnt need to be used wirelessly, also has ethernet ports.

if you uninstall mcafee and replace with avast, make sure windows firewall is on before connecting to the net, as a usb adsl modem doesn't have a firewall.

its difficult to say for sure, you have so much running it could be caused by lots of things, so a slimmed down setup should help either cure or identify the cause

does it happen in explorer or a package, how much ram is installed and whats the commit charge, do you backup your data?

no it doesn't happen in explorer just the pics on file..I disabled it and now its just another message coming up instead and freezing the screen..no I don't back up..the only things I back up is photos on a disc....I phoned my DH and his response was, its old, buy another one...which we were planning anyway but just thought it would be a quick fix!..Thing is I can get on the internet straight away its just the photos..I can edit and upload etc..just can't copy and move!lol..vitual memory is low too but thats been happening for months and months.

    right

    Commit charge...Total 651492...Limit 1252279....Peak 683968

it probably is a quick fix

follow post 13, 5-10 minutes effort vs £300 upwards for a new one

It's a minor software glitch not a hardware problem or anything to do with age

No not yet!;) I have someone selling me a lappy to tide me over!lol..tomorrow I'm on the phone to talktalk for a wireless connection and I'm off to pc world if it stays dry!;)..had to restart this thing 3 times....but its allowing me to upload edited photos so I'm doing that right now before it gets worse..but thank you for the mega help today it so appreciated..! Actually quite scarey how you can reel it all off like its simple...it scares the dooda out of me!..I tried post 13..but its too techie, seriously I shouldn't be allowed out..BUT the guy thats giving me the lappy will have a look at it and try save the photos (he's techie)...not so bad as they are family ones and not customers..but even so hopefully it will work out ok...thanks again you've been brilliant!..and I'll never darken your doorstep again...unless I take a course in computing!;)

It really is easy, if you don't understand something, just ask

Presumably you are able to uninstall and install programs?

uninstall adaware in control panel, add/remove programs
download avast free from the link above.
    disconnect from the net
uninstall mcafee in control panel, add/remove programs, may need a reboot after
go into control panel, security center and turn windows firewall on
    install avast
    connect to net.

    5 minutes work

There is probably nothing at all wrong with the machine, it's a minor software problem, so don't see the point throwing money at new equipment until you've tried these things, but it's upto you

You want a free wireless router, not a wireless connection - the wireless router then plugs into your network card with an ethernet cable (assuming there is one in the pc)

A £40 usb 500 GB 2.5" portable drive, and 50DVD's for backup purposes may be useful
