Wash Day Blues

I realise this isn't strictly to the point, but myself and my daughter gave up wearing matched socks ages ago, and that saves so much time at all stages.
To make it really easy, I wear black and blue and she wears the rest, what a timesaver!0 -
2 boys, by the quads I mean these, you can see from the pic of DP on this one how dirty it gets, and this was a mild day
Very rough and tumble son hence the clothes they go through. Youngest has asthma and I find keeping things, especially curtains (which works out monthly if I do one set a week) and cushions etc clean helps with that. I forgot I also do the duvets at least once a fortnight and all the pillows off the bed, so probably more than 2 loads on those days.
When son and DP are out on the quad bikes the mud, ewww well it's horrid. Usually adds at least another 3 loads to the weeks washing with the moto x clothes, jackets etc and that is after I hose the mud off in the garden. I used to end up behind with the washing all the time but I find having a routine helps. I tend to put it away when putting the children to bed on a night now, while they are settling down after story time. Only me who sorts/does washing and the rest of the cooking/housework so needed a routine that worked. One day I might be more organised...........

I put a wash on every night straight after they have gone to bed, put in the tumble dryer so when it is my bed time it goes up with me, gets thrown into respective bedrooms and the next day they have all their school clothes or p.e or whatever.
I have been doing the same for years and it works out fine, one wash at night, oh apart from the weekends when the sheets, towels etc gets washed during the day to put back on at night .... xxx0 -

I actually found a rather nifty laundry sorter in Poundland yesterday (this sort of thing: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-LAUNDRY-BASKET-TOY-POPUP-TYPE-CHOICE-OF-14-COLOURS_W0QQitemZ120062667201QQihZ002QQcategoryZ43517QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem). It's only a double, and doesn't have a cover, but it's collapsible (and only cost a quid!).bubblebathgirl wrote:Spendless aww sweet cant offer any advice my washing pile never seems to shift we are onley 3 (me ,o/h and dd who's 5) we always have loads i have 2 day's off from work during a normal working week and still have a mountain does not help that d/h uses 2 towels each day one for hair and one for body his hair abount 2 cm long no matter how much i try and trick him he seems to know grrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!
And speaking of Poundland, they do some very nifty little microfibre towels, which are excellent for drying hair and so much smaller than normal towels. Even better (if you can persuade him to wear one) are their microfibre turbans, which fasten with a button at the back (very, very like these ones from Lakeland, but oh so very much cheaper: http://www.lakelandlimited.co.uk/product.aspx/solutions/bathroom!20623)sloppychops wrote:lol i dont either(hangs head in shame).Curtains are the last thing on my mind to be washing every week as its a hard enough job keeping up with normal washing and bedding.Kazonline wrote:Errrm, I've had my cushions for about 3 years and let's just say I was wondering the other day whether they would be ok in the wash.....

Hi
well since starting this thread, I seem to be keeping more up to date with the laundry. I think our new TD dries quicker so that's prob helping. Not yet at the point where I don't need it as much, but hey baby steps:D .
What we still seem to have a mountain of is clean underwear that never makes it to the respective bedrooms/drawers.
starting out again with a bulk load of the same socks would def help, but I'm going to wait till after xmas just in case we get a load bought;)
I'll ask here, girls white school socks. DD are going off colour, I always do whites on their own. I have a vague memory of mum boiling my socks in a big pan to keep them white, would she have added anything to the pan of water0 -

Loads of ideas on there for the socks, saves me typing it all again.
Pleased to hear you're making progress. I did a sock clear out about a month ago. Paired up all the socks we had, decided there was more than enough and threw out all the odd ones left(black sack between 4 of us just showed how bad it was) and intend doing it again in January.
I wash all smalls in a laundry bag, dry them together so socks stay together as much as possible anyway, and put them away straight away. One day I might be more organised...........

I've realised I'm a very sad woman. I remember my Mum's first washing machine, a tub thing with a mangel on the top - it all boiled a lot and you had to use tongs to get stuff out as it was so hot. It didn't rinse, just heated the water and stirred things round, I think, so rinsing had to be done in the sink and the whole kitchen got full of steam and the floor got wet so it was slippery and dangerous, and sometimes you got your fingers pinched in the mangel. I got my first automatic washing machine when we got married in 1972 and I used to sit in front of it hypnotised and delighted by watching the clothes getting clean all by themselves. I can still get huge pleasure from watching that happening through the porthole and I get a bit disappointed if there's nothing to wash (only two of us in house now). There are advantags to being so old since I really love washing things (OH does all the ironing - always has as my standards round his work collars weren't high enough for him - clever me !) and am disappointed when there's nothing dirty to wash.
What strange (and clearly rather odd) pleasures, eh ?:rotfl:0 -
I live on my own and I seem to generate a ton of washing! about 5 loads a week.
1 load or whites, 1 load of darks, 1 load of coloureds, 1 load of bedding and 1 load or towels!
God help me if my OH lived here or I had children I dont know how I would cope.
I suppose I generate so much as I have clean clothes each day, also clean pyjamas every night. If I go out then thats a second change of clothes in a day. Also change my bed every week to!
Im I being to "extravagant" do u think ?Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -
Hiya
there are 3 of us in our house, myself, hubby and our 10 month old daughter and I find I do the washing twice a week, usually 2 or 3 loads at a time. Most things get worn a couple of times if still clean, that goes for all of us. What I tend to do is in a morning sort the clothes out into piles ready to go in the machine and then put tem back into the basket so like I have all the whites put ontop of the coloures if that makes sense lol Then as soon as one is washed either put into tumble dryer or hang on line and put the next load in streight away. Must admit though that I dont iron unless I absolutly have to and thats hardly ever0
