Has anyone used / bought Jeldwen windows?

Hello knowledgable people!
We are currently researching which window to buy in what will be a new hole in our kitchen wall. We live in an 1850 cottage so don't want to go down the upvc route if we can possibly help it.
We've been doing web research and come across Jeldwen as a supplier of wooden framed windows - has anyone used them and what were your experiences?
At present, we're thinking of getting a factory finished soft wood frame - good / bad idea?
Anything else we should be thinking about? We will, in time, replace all the windows in the house (this is only another 3 plus bathroom!) but at present just want to get this one window in place to be able to progress the renovation.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Beebuzz,
Jeldwen windows are stormproof windows, this means the sashes (opening part) sticks out in front of the frames rather than flush with the frames.
This style of window originated around the 1930's so not really in keeping with an 1850's cottage.Jeldwen windows are budget windows and not great quality. The choice of ironmongery is very limited and all look very modern......
If you can afford it I would try getting some quotes from your local small joinery workshops.Would also say the more windows you have made(if made by a small joinery) at once will work out much cheaper .
Having said all that they are cheap and will last 15 years or so before starting to rot, hardwood Jeldwen windows won't last much longer than the softwood ones and factory finished windows is a good idea but care need when fitting them as they will damage easily.0
