Recently had my PC trashed by a virus which can by pass (by turning off) Ms Security Essentials software. So need it cleaned up and contents rescued (seems it is hidden rather than destroyed),
Decided to upgrade my home office network at same time by getting new pc and using old cleaned up one for my photo library etc.
Tried two local PC repair shops. One kept tossing me about, the other knew less than i do about networking and tried to blag. Need solid reliable techie types to do the job,
I used to work in IT so can talk techie but do not have time to spend on it when a professional lab will hopefully have software for virus removal and file transfer etc.
Anyone care to recommend somewhere ideally within striking distance of SW London. Will pay for the right job but the data is my business so PC World Tech guys and types whose first response it to reformat everything are no good to me..

Sorry to be a spoilsport but why ask for help on a money saving forum, it seems you can't be bothered to sort it out... perhaps "I used to work in IT so can talk techie" probably answers some of your questions about "Tried two local PC repair shops. One kept tossing me about, the other knew less than i do about networking and tried to blag." and if you worked in IT how did you allow it to be trashed. Told you I was a spoilsport , most of the techies on here would help you out FoC , sad but true4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . If you worked in IT then you know it won't take that long to sort out.0

I have not made myself clear. I last worked in IT ten years ago so I know how these things work in principle but I do not have the latest up to date software to clear up viruses and transfer data etc.The virus on my pc is a nasty one which requires editing the registry and running several different software tools over it - software I don't have. I thought I would get in a new PC and overhaul my home office network and software at the same time. As there is probably several days work which needs someone with more up to date skills than me, I thought it would make a nice little project for someone.
I would rather work in my chosen field these days and pay someone else to do this job for me. I have a friend who used to be a roofer, he doesn't do it now, but he is very knowledgeable about roofing and knew what he wanted done when he had his roof repaired last year. He was careful who he chose to do it and even went up on the roof to inspect it but he did not do it himself as he is getting on a bit.
I want to hire an IT proffessional, like I used to be, someone with whom I could have a sensible conversation about what I wanted done. I don't think that is so unreasonable.0 -
this one?

full scan with tdsskiller and malwarebytes, fix anything found before closing, post a hijackthis log, 30 seconds effort.

if you are unable to run any of the above, run rkill first

if all your data seems to have vanished, run this to unhide it

It's easy to do it yourself.
I would talk you through it, but I have a flight to catch.
Worst case scenario, you can simply take the hard drive out and put it into an external caddy costing for £4 to £11. You can even purchase a simple adapter, to save you even having to remove the hard drive from the computer in some cases. Then you can transfer you data yourself easily. You can the replace the hard drive and either clean up the malware with help from the people here and just run a Factory Restore.
Just give as much information as you can and the people here will see you through.0 -

It's not unreasonable at all.
The problem is that your average PC repair shop pays too little to their staff to retain anyone who knows their stuff. If you look at what they pay compared to what you would get on contract in, for example, a data centre, you can understand why someone who is really clued up won't be there long.0
