I saw a cheap heater in Morrisons for £15. It was only of the halogen heaters, I wondered if that might help, I heard that they are cheap to heat.0

Have you considered dumping the problem on the landlord? A humistat fan wouldn't get in the way the same as a dehumidifier. Otherwise I agree with other posters that keeping the background heat a bit higher it will help.0

Argos it. They may still be giving a £10 voucher for every £100 spent.
Or cheaper here.0 -
I'm a newbie here...and just seen this thread about mould and damp, as sadly my flat has similar problems.
My first tip would be to only use trade paint on your walls and ceilings, as a previous tenant of mine repainted for me, using some really cheap stuff from a well know DIY chain which started getting mouldy very quickly.
I've since repainted the flat with trade dulux and the only room where I see any mould now is in the bathroom, where I have to wash the walls on a 3-monthly basis with mould killer (which is also available from the same chain with the 2 initials). I use Polycell's brand, and it's best to check that it doesn't mark your paint work first though, if you have cheap paint on your walls.
I also have a question about extractor fans if anyone can help, as I do have one in my bathroom but I'm not sure if it's actually doing a great deal. I believe it might need a halfway fan on it's way to outside the building, and I don't know if there is one. With this is mind, would a humidstat extractor fan make a great deal of difference for me? I've set my existing fan so that it stays on for a good 15 or so minutes after use. Despite this, I still get mould on my walls and tiles, which get the mould killer treatment as mentioned above. Sadly my bathroom doesn't have a window - when I next buy a property that's the first thing I'm gonna insist upon!
Thanks for the links to dehumidifiers. I've always been reluctant to get one because of the cost of running one and the noise, but this thread is making me re-think about getting one.0 -
I have had my dehimfier for about 17 years, its only recently I have kept on it 24/7 during Autumn and Winter. I found it better to be on all the time at about 1/4 of the dial than just switch it on when required as quiet often it would stay on for longer and was noisey. It now doesnt go on a lot accept perhaps bathing/showering and putting washing on rads.
I ams sure when I ran a test on the dehumifier when on it consumed about 300w per hour. I got one of those electrical power things that can measure wattage/current0
