Aubergines - easy to grow & fruit in a London garden??

This thread got me thinking, I've never grown aubergines, but we had guacamole tonight, so I mentioned to the OH that I could try growing aubergines and what did she think of that?
Not much she said, we don't like them. But we could make guacamole I said, it's lovely. She very nicely then pointed out my error.
I put it down to premature ageing.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

Maybe switch the guacamole to baba ghanoush?

I've been growing aubergine on the windowsill and have now planted 4 plants in the growbags outside. They were in a selection of 6 veg from Poundland(think it was Med collection?). I thought I would give it a go, and each plant is now 10-12" tall.Reading your comments, hopefully I shall have some fruit from them. I also didn't think I'd get anywhere with my corgettes, again planted from seed (from Poundland). I don't even like corgette but like a challenge and want to encourage my little boys to eat more fruit and veg. I've picked my first corgette, about 8-9" long and there are 4 more growing at the mo!0

Are they special chillies for guac then? I think we put any old chilli in it.
Lotus-eater, try growing your own Poblano chillies to add your guacamole. I'm surprised at how well they're doing - about a dozen large plants in the greenhouse now from a packet of T&M seed.

Well we put chillies in salsa, because I make that. My OH makes the guac and she said she put home grown chillies in it, so I presume she does.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0

To all who are having a go at growing aubergines this year - please keep me updated! I'd be really interested to know what you did (growing conditions, area of UK/world, pollination etc), the variety you grew, and what your ultimate fruiting results were!
