Legally without trade plates no.0

You would probably be fined for failing to display and may have the vehicle seized HOWEVER if the disabled tax disc hadn't expired, it will still be on DVLAs computer as taxed and 99.9% of people in this situation will get away with driving it there.0

Its a LVLO you need, not the DVLA offices...0

Very likely you would get a fine if stopped.... but also if you pass a DVLA camera you will get a fine in the post some weeks later.
You check the cars tax status at the "vehicle enquiry" website, if it shows as taxed then go for it.
You could also get clamped by DVLA for parking the car anywhere including carparks..... Depends when the last tax disc was removed from the car. If it was last month then no, you probably wouldn't, if it was more than a month then yes you would.
Go on public transport, walk or ride a bike there or get a lift.0 -
isnt the disabled tax for the person and not the car?Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

How does that work then? Does the disabled person wear a tax disc?0 -

You're thinking blue badge.
If you're in receipt of the higher rate mobility component of DLA you can get free car tax, by applying for a certificate which lets you get the tax class on the car changed to disabled and a disabled tax disc.
Unlike BB's the tax is for one vehicle, and requires the DVLA to change it's taxation class (normally a trip to a regional DVLA office).
Also unlike the BB you can use the car without the disabled person in it, but theoretically only for the benefit of the disabled person.
However once the car changes owner, it's no longer for the benefit of the disabled person the tax disc was issued to, thus you're no longer taxed legally (as the condition of the free tax disc is that it's for that persons benefit).
I suspect you'd be unlucky to get done on a single trip to the dvla office though, unless the disabled person has already transferred the tax to a new car.
I personally wouldn't risk it though, as iirc the potential penalties for misuse of the disabled tax disc is harsher than that for no tax (as it's classed as fraud due to the financial aspects, and can give the driver various additional benefits such as free access to the congestion charge zone, and free use of some toll roads/bridges/tunnels).0 -
As far as i was aware, if you buy a car with a disabled tax disc on it the vendor has to remove the disc and surrender it before they can get a new one for another car, the new owner cant legally drive the car with the disabled tax as it wasnt issued to them.
afaik even if a disabled person buys a car with disabled tax on then im sure they cant use it until they tax it themselves with their exemption formsBe Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -

Partially correct and a bit confused in one part, the confusion may even be on my part in reading your post
:D.
The vendor does have to remove the Disabled Tax disc but the buyer can drive it as soon as they've bought a PLG one - they don't have to wait for the disabled person to surrender it. You are correct about the disabled person buying a car with a disabled disc on it. The person selling the car would need to retain the disc themselves in order for them to apply for a new one for their new car. Each disabled tax disc is in effect "married" to a number of the exemption certificate.0
