Attend Training Sessions without Pay!

Hi,
my OH has come home from work today (a nursing home) with a letter from her boss. It starts by saying there are "ever increasing funding restraints" and "we as a home must find ways to reduce our expenditure".
It goes on to say "We have therefore now decided that training requirements from the above date, for all staff will now be taken in the employees own time, (nursing home name deleted) will still continue to pay for the trainer / training session, you will now be expected to attend in your own time".
Some of these training sessions are only an hour or so, some are a half a day or even full day. All the staff work on a rota, roughly 5 days on 2 days off.
Staff are required to have these training sessions for health and safety, patient care etc.
My question is: can the employer force an employee to attend up to a full days training on their day off without pay?
The boss knows that many of the staff rely on their jobs as the only source of income into their homes and she uses this to enforce her will around the workplace. She also knows that the staff enjoy making the residents life's in their older years more comfortable, she constantly tells them that it's the residents who will suffer.
Not one employee will stand up to her because they know that they would lose their job. This has been proven many times in the past.

I dont reckon they can do that to be honest. Is your OH in a union?0

Do not fall for emotional blackmail .if this company managing the home cannot pay it's staff then they had better let someone who can take over .0

What rate of pay are people getting.
If everyone who works these hours and ends up below NMW puts in a complaint to the NMW office the(employer) will get a call and might find their books gone over and previous under payments might also get paid.
If enough peole are looing out they can't all be sacked.0 -

They all get the NMW, my OH has not had a pay rise for over 3 years except when the NMW has gone up.
If only something could be done to bosses like this, she treats her staff like crap and gets away with it time after time. On more than one occasion I have wanted to go down there and speak to this boss but my OH has asked me not to."Nil Sine Labore" - Nothing Without Labour0 -

Something can be done, but only once the staff stand up for themselves and refuse to bow to her every demand. Expecting staff on MW to attend full-day training sessions frankly is ridiculous. They should tell her as much and refuse to attend them if they are outside of working hours and unpaid.0 -

Just work the hours and then put in a complaint to the NMW office
(If you can list all the people affected and all the times it has happened it might help).

Not sure if I am reading it a different way but to me it sounds like your OH will still be paid, it is just that he will have to complete the training outside his usual hours??

My daughter is a care assistant and was told that she had to attend trainings in her own time, and not be paid for the time she is there. This is with an agency. She pointed out that this could take her below minimum wage and would have to seek advice from her union - she is now paid for trainings. She didn't have to go as far as contacting the union.
She joined Unison last year and pays less than £10 a month, which is well worth the support should she ever need it.0
