Retailer odd behaviour.........?

I paid for some shoes in a national retail outlet yesterday, as the transaction was going through on my electron card, the cashier called his supervisor over, queried something that I couldn't hear, and the supervisor said "Its ok you can do it at the end". The transaction went through fine, and then the cashier looked at my card and typed something onto his EPOS system. .At that stage I asked what he was doing, and the supervisor said that they have to type the last 4 digits onto the system, and that all systems are the same. I replied that they most certainly are not, and that one of the points of chip and pin is that the cardholders details are protected.
I felt very embarrassed by the whole thing, but I also wonder if my account security has been compromised? Has anyone come accross this before?

If they are only typing the last four digits you shouldn't be compromised.
Its not standard on every system that I've ever seen. The only thing I can think of is that their accounting department have a lot of transactions going through for the same amounts so are using this as a method of reconciling the receipts.0 -
everything written on the card is accessible from the chip with the exception of the 3 digit CVV; if that wasn't what they were noting down, don't be concerned.0

Most till receipts through a machine show the last four digits of a card if one was used.0

Just to reinstate if they did write down the CVV they could then perform CNP (Card not present) transactions, if you are sure that they didn't look at the back of your card at all you should be safe.0 -
the last 4 digits are recorded so that any refund is put back onto the correct card. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

And for fraud investigation, but they are automatically printed on the receipt...
Every retailer where I have used my card the customer copy only shows the last 4 digits, but the retailer copy shows the entire card number...Not as green as I am cabbage looking0 -

It may be that this company do not have their tills tied to the credit card machine so that why they input it on the till as well.0
