Colchester?

Options
I have been looking at properties in Colchester on rightmove and the prices there are so much cheaper than London.

Can anyone give me areas to avoid?
Are Colchester prices low for a reason? (The bargainous prices have made me somewhat suspicious.)

Property everywhere is cheaper than in London! Excepting Monaco perhaps.

Colchester is a huge garrison town and I expect that is a major factor where prices are concerned

I was looking in Colchester and Chelmsford for houses, but I'd prefer to be closer to London for work. Plus train fares are way more expensive, £40-50 compared to the £15 I pay now. I do know that quite a few friends have moved to Colchester because prices are so cheap.

Although I would much prefer living in Monaco, Colchester is where my new job offer is.

Some nice villages in North Essex/Suffolk border, commutable into Colchester, where you can pay more, if you want to...

    Colchester.
  • Colchester is cheaper because it's a bit far for London commuting. Chelmsford is more expensive because it is in easy reach - although cheaper than brentwood/Shenfield which are more convenient still for London.

Depends on what you want to spend - there are some extremely expensive villages between Chelmsford and Colchester because they have the London-commute factor and the village atmosphere.

I'd suggest Basildon, the Monaco of Essex. :D

Are you referring to its aptly-named nightclub and casino area, Bas Vegas?!

There is an estate near the University of Essex, called Greenways or Greenfields - something like that - it is a dump, stay away. Places like Wivenhoe are really nice. I like Colchester, but I guess there is no accounting for taste.

The trainline to Colchester isn't great. I'd recommend Southend/Leigh on Sea/Benfleet area which is served by the c2c line and is only 40-50mins to London. Nice places too.
