Hi my advent is about 3 yrs old and when I put it on last wk there was a line about half way down all across the screen, and now there is another near the bottom, I don't know what they are and don't want to pay for somebody to fix it if you guys can help me. It never goes away whatever is on the screen, sorry I am not very good with computers as I am a learner.
Would appreciate any ideas on what it might be and if it can be fixed.
Thanx

You can get symptoms like this with out of date graphics chipset drivers, but if the lines are there all the time - even before Windows starts to load up - then it's typically a failure of the edge connector on the display.
You can sometimes make them go away temporarily by gently squeezing the edge of the casing next to the line, but that's never a permanent fix.
The only permanent fix I'm aware of is to replace the screen.0 -
Have you tried wiggling the display cable, just in case there is a dodgy connection somewhere? Unlikely, but just in case!
If you press the menu button (or equivalent) on your screen, does the line go over the menu text? If it is over the top of it, then surely a problem with the screen itself, not the computer or the cable.0 -
In my experience, it is usually the screen that is defective when you have a persistent line. You can get replacement panels from around £60-£90 from Ebay (I use Analogic) and it should cost no more than an hour in labour to pay someone to do it. If you feel like having a go, typically you need to remove the screen bezel (bit around the screen)which is usually held in by 4 screws and then unclip that from the lid. Next there should be a plug with white and pink wires going into a small rectangular board. Unplug that. Next, see the hinges with four screws on each side of the LCD holding it to the lid? Undoing those allows you to tilt the LCD panel forward. You'll see a flat cable going up the back to a connector near the top (may be held in by tape). Pinching the plug on the end of the connector in from the sides allows you to remove it. Replacing the screen is the reversal of removal. There are plenty of videos on the interwibble on how to do this and the basics apply to all laptops.0
