Carpet and upholstery cleaning??

My carpets and sofa's could do with a big old clean (hoover them etc of course but had both for about ten years now!)
Had some quotes and could get the lounge carpet and both sofa's cleaned professionally for £60, which is an absolute bargain.
However, thought I'd check here first to see if anyone has any do it yourself cleaning tips?
