may be ok, I prefer the belt and braces approach
1. shadow copy backup, check all data is there on the usb drive in a folder
2 maxblast backup, also create a maxblast boot cd and check it can boot and see your usb drive.
3 really important stuff backed up to dvd in case usb drive fails.
4. restore using factory restore partition if available rather than from mesh cd
5. restore data from shadow copy backup
if 4 or 5 fails, boot from maxblast cd and restore back to how it is now!!

The Maxblast is about 1/2 way through. When that is complete I will do as per your list. Thank you again for your help.0

as you have a seagate drive you can use maxblast (free from seagate website) to do a full disk image as well as a shadow copy assuming you have enough disk space, then use the factory restore partition to reinstall vista and copy your data back from the shadow copy.
if anything goes wrong, you have the disk image to recover the whole system back to the way it was.
really important data, copy to dvd as well

Linbox, can you or someone else help and/or reassure me with regards to Macrium Reflect. I still haven't backed up my neighbours HD (another thread), 'cos each time I've downloaded this program and scanned it with avast...my AV....I get the results saying "this file is a compression bomb (42110)", and having googled this, it doesn't look too healthy for a PC, although I understand it doesn't contain any viruses! TIA

I think avast is just having trouble decompressing and scanning the iso linux bootdisc file, as it's designed to scan windows files. Scan is below, it's safe.
It is mentioned on the macrium forum

You could use maxblast if you have a seagate or maxtor drive, or other alternatives.!!
