Part P electrical certificate

Is there normally a seperate charge for a part P electrical certificate? We are having our bathroom redone, which has involved a new extractor fan, replacement ceiling light, wall light above cabinet and an electric heater. On the quotation is a seperate £50 charge for the part P certificate. Shouldn't the qualified tradesman just issue it on completion of their work?

  • If your property is in England or Wales, it depends on whether the electrician is part of a self certification scheme and what you agreed with him before the work started. (I'm not sure of the rules in Scotland).

If he is part of a registered scheme he will have to pay a nominal fee of a couple of quid to submit the forms to the body that administers the scheme such as NAPIT, ELECSA or NICEIC.

If he is not part of a scheme, and there are lots of competent electricians who aren't (because of the costs), he should have already advised the Building Control Dept of the local authority before the work started and then pay a fee when he submits the forms to them. These fees vary and are typically about £150.

You can call your BC Dept and ask them what they charge. Please let us know how you get on.

If the quote states an extra £50 for the cert and you signed up to it then that is what you pay.

There is actually quite a bit of work involved to issue that cert on its own. All the circuits that are worked on have to be inspected and tested, then the results are copied down onto that certificate. £50 is quite reasonable - believe me.

IMO your contractor is being diligent and very honest in itemising for it separately, so that you can see what you are paying for. Much better than simply quoting a total figure.

It's a bit like taking your car in for a service and MOT and simply being asked for £500 without a breakdown of the costs involved. The MOT will cost around £40 for the inspection and test. Then there's the labour and materials for MOT preparation and servicing, all of which should be itemised separately.

  • I have noticed this trend recently, where certiain companies are charging for certificates seperately.
Was talking to a kitchen fitter who said their electrical firm wanted to change the price of sockets from £45 to £50, but instead slapped on a £50 charge for a certificate, for wach job. These should be given anyway (according to the wiring regulations)
    baldly going on...

baldelectrician is correct, certification was there before part p,the only difference now is the notification to building control for certain installs.
it.s around 500quid a year to belong to a part p scheme for the leccy.so i assume some have decided to make some extra money out of it,

Just a blonde double check - we've just had a kitchen installed, including a load of new sockets - we've had a cert through for the gas installation of the cooker, but not had any electrical certification through.

Should I chase up with the fitting company? (I haven't signed off on the kitchen to allow the finance company to release the funds yet :))

i would ask the fitting company why you have'nt recieved any certification, and also check with your council building control to see if the work has been logged with them.
