I stand by garlic - you can get odourless garlic granules from holland and barrett, which work very well. Just add a bit to dog's food. We've used it on our dogs for years and never have issues with ticks or fleas :)

I do hope you mean you trod on a tick, not a hoggie :D:D

Hogs are in serious decline, due to all sorts of problems, nearly all man made. The best thing we can do for them is make our gardens wildlife friendly and not concrete over them like so many people do.Also put food and shallow dishes of water out for them especially when it is hot and in the autumn while they are trying to fatten up.Yiou never know,if you add a hedgfehog house as well you might just encourage one or more to visit.

For any advice on them, this site where i am a member is fantastic and really interesting.

Advantix is a veterinary spot on treatment which repels ticks for 4 weeks.

Seems to work well in my experience, prescription only though, and must NEVER be used on cats.

If you make sure all ticks are removed, then apply it every 4 weeks it should solve your problem. I must admit I do not like ticks!! Eww!

Another important thing is never just pull them out - the must be removed with an anticlockwise motion - otherwise the head may get stuck in the skin (eww again). You canactually get a tick remover - better than using tweezers http://www.otom.com/how-to-remove-a-tick

Using surgical spirit to make them drowsy can help

if you shop around you will find the best price.Works very well,I should know i have removed over 50 ticks in one go on a poor little hedgehog!

Been there, done that - not nice at all is it? Poor little hogs :(

Much as I despise ticks though, it is kinda satisfying to remove the big fat ones... or maybe thats the vet nurse in me coming out.... I also love popping abcesses lol!

Frontline seems to work in my experience, sometimes ticks still bite but they fall off pretty quick, a relative who lived with us had a dog that used to get loads (often during his hunts in undergrowth for hedgehogs :( we had loads in our garden before the dog) and sometimes we'd find ticks on the floor which were 'empty' so can't have been attached for long.

This was a few years ago so they could be resistant to frontline now though I suppose. Current dog is treated with frontline and never gets ticks but doesnt do all the hunting in undergrowth that the other dog did so maybe she is never exposed to ticks.
