IKEA issue

Hi MSE buddies,
I'm having a bit of a dispute with Ikea and wonder if you could help.
I bought 6 INGOLF chairs in February 2008. I bought seat pads for them and they have been subjected to no more than a normal amount of use / average wear and tear. We are a household of two adults, with occaisional dinner guests. We don't stand on the chairs or lean back on two legs or drag them around. We respect our furniture. That is why I am very disappointed that four of them have broken and are no longer usuable. In one case the fronts legs have come off and in the other three the crossed back supports have broken.
I emailed Ikea outlining the above and was told - one year warranty only, sod off.
I wrote back and quoted SOGA and Limitation Act and they told me that they are willing to investigate if I return the goods to the store with proof of purchase.
I bought them three years ago and no longer have the receipt. I could have lied in my first contact and said I bought them 11 months ago but lost the receipt but I didn't because I am honest.
My question is do I need the receipt to take this further with Ikea? (I bought them on my CC but do not have the receipt - although I understand that Ikea can cross reference purchases against card numbers?)
Thanks in advance.

If you've taken them back and they're 'investigating' then I'd see what comes of the situation first. They may offer a refund or replacement.:cool:0

Regardless, you are required to have some proof of purchase, receipt, back/credit card statement etc. will do. Ikea are under no oblogation to investigate this for you, as the items are over 6 months old the onus is on you to prove an iherent fault. Sound to me Ikea are being quite helpful.0

Show them a copy of the relevant item in your CC statement. That should hopefully suffice as proof of purchase."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

3 years use from a £35 chair seems reasonable to me. £11 a year give or take a few pence.0

Indeed, Ikea also advise you to go round and retighten the screws regularly as the wood will tend to shrink and screws work loose over time. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Never had any issues with IKEA, often found they are being more than generous with returns etc. I would be reasonable with them, but surely, you must have done something to the chairs to make them break?0

Not really. I have 4 Ikea dining chairs, can't recall the name but they were certainly cheaper than the ingolfs. They are 2 years old and used lightly, but like penrhyn says they need tightening up from time to time. You can feel the 'give' in the back of the chair when it needs a tighten.
If OP hasn't tightened the chairs over the 3 years its conceivable that they did just fall apart.0
