Unit Trust performance

I bought a Unit Trust around 1985.
I have lost the details of how much I invested and the exact date of investment.
The unit trust company haven't been able to help with the details of the purchase as they say they don't keep them that long.

Is there any way I could at least find out what the performance has been over the timespan, say how much would £1000 be worth now.

This is for CGT purposes, I've been able to access the money and withdrawer it without problem.

Thanks.

The only time I was unsure I simply sold it in instalments annually within the Capital Gains annual allowances which means it didn't matter what the starting value was, but it sounds like you have already sold it so it is too late to do that.

The unit trust company ought to be able to tell you what the unit price of the fund was in 1985, so just compare that with the price you sold it at. That assumes you were not adding to it over the years.

No I didn't add to it over the years and I was taking it out in instalments within the CGT allowance.
Then last year I made an error which I realised the moment the sell letter left my hand to drop into the post box but then even with immediate phone calls and emails the deal still went through the next day.
Now I have a CGT 'payment' to make and have problems calculating the amount.

I can't believe that there is no way of finding how much you paid initially. The company you bought it from must have a record somewhere - I would have thought they were obliged to keep a record perhaps on film (can't remember the name).

Do you not keep records of investments?

If you write to Diana Wright at Questions of Money in the Sunday Times she will do her best to help you.

Fortunately the investments that have made the best gains for me are in ISAs (was PEPs when bought) e.g. British Gas.

    Hope you get it sorted.

Have you looked at the HMRC web site it has various indexation tables and details of the way the basis of relief has changed over the years.

Must have been some investment to rack up those sort of gains - the unit trusts I have will have done well to keep up with the index linking:(

There was a period in the early to mid 90s when data protection came in that basically saw financial firms chucking out data over 6 years old. It was only later that it became clear that you dont have to destroy data after 6 years. Problem is that the damage was already done in many cases.

It was worth around 50k when I started off loading.
    I've got in my mind that I only invested 1 k or 1.5 k.
I know that means it increased a lot but that's what I believe to be the case.
That's why if I could get some idea of the unit price around 1985 and I know the unit price now I'd have a reasonable idea if my 'guess' was in the right ball park.

Obviously I did have the buy details at some point but I can't find them now.

And I have asked the UT company for info but they aren't interested.
I'll have to try them again.
    Thanks all.
    Any other suggestions gratefully received.

I've written to Question of Money twice now on different matters.
I've had one answered in the paper.

I might well try that again.

I'm surprised that the manager won't at least give you some fund price information from [say] 1985.

What fund is it? Somebody may be able to help. I still have some very old Unit Trust reports that I've never got round to throwing out!

I can understand that a specific purchase note may have been destroyed by the manager but I would have thought he would have some form of record/statement of unit holders holdings value at least on an annual basis. How else could they compile their accounts?

So you sold only last year. And neither you nor the Unit Trust company know what fund it was?

    Tell us another one.
