Wishlist website idea, would u use one?

Hi everyone,

Ok so iv got a simple website idea. A wishlist website where members can open a profile and upload up to 5 products they desire. These products can be viewed by friends and families to help buy presents for birthdays and Christmas, or simply just a gifts. The friend or family can click on the product and will redirected straighted to the product online where they can buy it from.

The idea plays on the two current hot markets social networking and social commerce.

Would you use a website like this?

Many Thanks

I wouldn't use it unless you can persuade me that it's better than Amazon's Universal Wish List. And limited to five products...not a chance, sorry.
  • Thank you for your response,

I see where you coming from. However the USP would be In the business approach, each product would be linked to an affiliate link so when a product is bought by a friend it would generate commission for the the site. Although I understand this is not from the consumers experience.

How about if the site included features where friends could comment on the products, give their opinions lime they would in a shop. Also if a product is brought by a friend it is marked on the list as brought autonomously, creating suspense for the member?

    Many thanks

I suspect you mean 'anonymously'. ie the member doesn't know who has bought it, rather than it's been bought independently, without further reference to the member.

Who gets the commission - your site? So why is it to my advantage to use this?

Sorry yes I ment anonymously, it's my spell check.

Yes my site would get the commission,

Benefits, you can log and see what your friends want as gifts to help you buy presents for them and you can comment on their there products as like you would when you go shopping. Like a social shopping website.

    What do you think?

You're asking the wrong person! I don't 'do' the whole social networking thing. I don't need my friends to comment on my choice of gift (not that many of my friends buy for me anyway, only close family), nor do I think it polite to send a detailed list of what I want.

Plus can't you effectively put your wish list on facebook anyway? Everyone seems to have their whole life on public display there. Apart from me, of course!

and me sue - I dont agree with FB!
As for OP, no I don't and would never do a wish list, and see no need to. If people know you well enough and want to get you a pressie, they will get you something that you want, because they know you and know what you would like.
I wouldnt spend a couple of hours listing what i would like from where - that isnt a present. Something you mentioned in random real life convo, that appears is a present and a surprise - thats the special bit. People listened to you, thought about what you want...
Its the thought that counts for me.

I wouldn't use this service myself but it might work for teens if you integrate it with Facebook. There's that email FB send out with: x number of your friends have a birthday this week. If the friends in question had promoted their wishlist on their profile then maybe someone would click through to it when they visited the profile to post a message (as prompted by the email). Of course, this would only work on last minute purchases, so maybe you'd also have to suggest items that can be bought and delivered quickly.

As a standalone website, not a chance. As a 'facebook app', it's the kind of thing that goes down well there - just make it glitzy and gimmicky enough - those guys place no value on privacy!
