Housing Benefit, Disability Premium

Hi does anyone know if there is such a thing as a disability premium for housing benefit. I have been on incapacity for quite a while and me and my family are moving into privately rented accomodation. The standard ammount we will get is £450.02 a month. We will be making up the difference to what the rent actually is.

Basically does anyone know if we would get an extra disability payment per month?

Thanks very much

I think extra payments due to disability are only applied if you have to move to a house larger than one you'd be able to live in if you did not have a disability. For example moving into a 2 bedroom house rather than a single bedroom home because you need an extra bedroom for a live-in carer.

There is a disability premium in HB. This is included in the amount calculated for the applicable amount so would be taken into account in the calculation but wouldn't give you an additional payment on top
I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.

if you receive DLA then there is no reduction in benefit for a non dependant. i dont think its extra 'on top'

    Disability premium
You must be under the qualifying age for pension credit and one of the following applies to you or your partner:
    • are registered as blind, or taken off that register in the past 28 weeks
    • are getting one of the following qualifying benefits - attendance allowance, disability living allowance (DLA), long-term incapacity benefit (IB), severe disablement allowance (SDA), the disability element or severe disability element of working tax credit, war pensioner's mobility supplement, constant attendance allowance
    • you are the claimant and you have been incapable of work or entitled to statutory sick pay during the qualifying period of 52 weeks (or 28 weeks if you are terminally ill) and still be incapable of work.
If you have a partner you will be paid a higher couple rate of this premium.
You cannot get this premium if you are getting employment and support allowance or have a limited capability for work.

    What is the disability premium?

The disability premium is extra income support, income based job seekers allowance, housing benefit, or council tax benefit paid to you if you or your partner have health problems that stop you from working. If you do not currently get income support, housing benefit or council tax benefit, you may qualify for one or more of these benefits once you've satisfied the conditions for the disability premium.

    How much do you get?

    Single people

On income support? You will get £23.95 extra a week.
On housing benefit? Your rent will be reduced by up to £15.57 per week.
On council tax benefit? Your bill could be reduced by up to £4.77 per week

    Couples

On income support? You will get £34.20 per week extra.
On housing benefit? Your rent will be reduced by up to £22.23 per week.
On council tax benefit? Your bills could be reduced by up to £6.84 per week.

However, ask your local benefit office, claiming the extra premium for housing can be complicated.
How people treat you becomes their karma; how you react becomes yours.
