Charges for ending BT contract

I am trying to ind out a bit of advice.

About a year ago, BT done something what stopped me paying my bill on time (I think they tried charging to me too much....about £200 for 3 landlines i didn't have and other charges).

I was already with BT for about 18-24 months by then and they cut off my phone line and broadband.

I eventually sorted of the right bill and paid it but when i asked to be reconnected (which they did), they set me up on a new 18 month contract which i never asked for. I will never sign up for the longest contract in case i want to switch.

This last couple months have been really tough and I haven't been able to pay my bill on time. I haven't got a direct debit because i would rather pay my bill late instead of getting a bank charge of £25.

I spoke to BT a while ago and they said if i wanted to cancel, i would have to pay up until the end of the 18 month contract..

What i want to know is, i never agreed to an 18 month contract, i just wanted to be reconnected, can they make me pay up until the end of the 18 month contract even though I was with them for nearly 2 years already.

If so, what can they charge me for? I have my phone line, calls and broadband with BT and i want to ditch the lot and go with some provider much cheaper.

Any advice will be gratefully recieved.

Your reconnection started a whole new contract. How long you had been there previously is irrelevant.

However much you protest, you will have agreed to this contract and yes, they will have the proof, even if it is just in a telephone call, if you want to cancel they can charge you in full to the end of your contract if you want to cancel. Easiest way is just to let it run on to its end and then cancel. Do you have long to go?

Not the case if it was a 'wrongful' disconnection - OP should be in the position he was in prior to the disconnection.
