daily food waste

I have been reading frugal girls blog and once a week on a friday she photos any food waste before she throws it away.
I was thinking maybe we could do the same sort thing of thing without the photos and daily.
Today I had some manky looking salad leaves and I was going to sling them. But feed them to the rabbit instead.
And I salvaged some manky carrots for my sunday lunch.
So far today my food waste is zero.
Any takers

Hi calley,
We have an existing thread along the same lines which is there to help others get ideas for using up leftovers:
Leftovers? Use it up! Don't throw it in the bin!
I'll add your thread to it later to keep the replies and suggestions together.

great idea will help show what others can make with food past its best well i had a bunch of bananas that were going black today that i turned into banana loaf and also mushed then for kids and had 'special' jam on toast they loved it if you say special or super treat my kids will eat anything especially if you say the queen says we need to :rotfl:
sorry when my little one was really young he never liked us going out and letting anyone babysit (they were grannys and grandads) and one night when he was screaming saying dont go i said ive got to the queen says so and ive done it ever since probs havnt got long till he says yeah whatever but then he wont be bothered anyway :rotfl:0 -
Some pretty wrinkly carrots and parsnips went in the stock pot with the chicken carcus - lovely

I'm after some ideas for herbal/fruit tea bags.
I already use my green tea bags for toner but stuck on how to use up these varitiesI'm challenging myself to only buy clothes from charity shops till 20th May 2012.

be careful giving rabbits salad leaves, their stomachs cant handle it and it can give them a runny bum.
Sounds like a good idea tho.0 -

Dear Pink,
I knew this was going to happen when I posted this thread.
The point I am trying with this thread is not about leftovers or stuff that can be be salvaged. I think some posters seem to think that is what it is about.
It is about food that is going to be wasted no matter what, and is going in the bin or to be composted. I managed to divert two things today.
I don't think that something that has gone green and furry is going to be used in another meal.
So really don't feel that it that is along the same lines as the leftover thread at all(which I have posted on in the past). As this thread is about when it is to late.
Rather a daily diary for people so they can keep track for themselves of the items that they have binned.
You must do what you feel is for the best.

I think it's a bit blurred for what it is worth.
My carrots and parsnips were manky, I wouldn't have used them in a meal but they're fine in the stock.
As for my teabags.. they're absolutely destined for the waste, whatever that may be, but I diverted (green tea ones anyway) that too by using it for toner.
I think both mine and rumdiddlyum posts were with the ethos of the OP's post but belong in the leftovers too.
If this thread is strictly for using up really grotty, mouldy food then the options don't seem to be that many to be fair.
I do see also how my post should have been in the other thread but being new didn't realise there was already a thread like that. See how I think the lines are a bit blurred?I'm challenging myself to only buy clothes from charity shops till 20th May 2012.

I don't often have food which is too far gone that it can't be used. A couple of weeks ago though I had some carrots which dripped out of the bag they were in  I have to admit it's not something I've ever seen before. I didn't realise carrots could turn into liquid.0

The contents of tea bags have excellent nutrients for roses, tomatoes etc., and are good to add to the compost bin

As my fridge freezer went on the blink either friday or saturday and I was unable to salvage anything I had a huge pile of waste today 2 packets of diced pork, 12 chicken breasts, 4 salmon steaks, 8 chicken thighs, smoked cod, 2 lots of fish pie mix, pork fillet, 3 packets of mince beef, 15 eggs, 2 soft cheese, 1 goats cheese, brie, cheddar, 6 yogurts,1pizza, garlic bread, various cooked meats and various half used jars and bottles.:(:("Let your boat of life be light, pack only what you need- A homely home and simple pleasures, one or two friends worth the name, someone to love and someone who loves you, a cat, a dog, a pipe or two enough to eat, enough to wear and a little more than enough to drink, as thirst is a dangerous thing" Jerome k. Even though I am a big recycler I do seem to get an awful lot of food waste which goes in my council food waste bin, its mainly fruit and veg peelings but there is a lot of waste from the kids who start something and don't finish it or who just don't feel like their dinner, I also find storage an issue especially for things like old bread etc.DMP 2021-2024: £30,668 £0 🥳
