should i be worried..........?

Hi everyone,

just used my debit card in a shop, upon looking at the receipt of the transaction when i got back in the car, i noticed that the receipt had the long 16 digit number on it, and both the expirey and valid from dates! is this normal?

i know from previous transactions that normaly some digits are blanked out with stars

can they use my card to purchase stuff now....

thanks for any help!

Luke

This information is on every retailers copy of the receipt, they need it so that transactions can be traced if necessary. It is only on the card holders copy they blank it all out on.

Until recently it was quite common for both copies to contain all the details but i believe this is being phased out, although it crops up on the odd one where retailers are using an old system still. Of course it is possible that they gave you their copy of the receipt instead of yours.

I dont think there is any reason for alarm.

Nope - if they purchase online - they'd need the CV2 number (the last 3 digits from the strip on the back) and if they purchased in a shop (in England) - they'd need to have stolen the card and pin.

If they wanted to use it in an ATM - they'd need a clone of the card (magstripe will work in some ATMs still) and the pin.

If they wanted to shop abroad - they'd just need a clone of the magstripe - they could sign still in most countries.

All in all - the information on the receipt wouldn't help them. Not completely anyway. But it's good practise to shred it.
