should i be worried..........?

Hi everyone,

just used my debit card in a shop, upon looking at the receipt of the transaction when i got back in the car, i noticed that the receipt had the long 16 digit number on it, and both the expirey and valid from dates! is this normal?

i know from previous transactions that normaly some digits are blanked out with stars

can they use my card to purchase stuff now....

thanks for any help!

Luke

The shop I work in the customer copy has some numbers starred but the shop copy has the number in full on. Does the receipt say "customer copy" or Merchant copy?

  • I've had this happen to me in a few shops, i have noticed that the BIG shops tend to block your card numbers, as a result i now always look at the reciept and burn them, to prevent fraud.

    Hi it says merchant copy

    thanks
  • Some places may not have changed their card machines over. At my place of work, our machine only got changed about 4 months ago and used to print off the full details. It was only changed then because the machine stopped working and HSBC had to send us a new one. I don't think there is anything sinister about it, but in theory someone could use the detail if they were so inclined. I think there was/is a certain date when all machines should be asterisked out and it it up to the machine provider to issue it to the shop. Don't know when it was supposed to be though unfortunately, I just heard it on the news a while ago.

If you have the Merchant Copy, could that mean that you will never get charged for the goods?

But get a new card anyway and have that one cancelled.

Before all the machines, the numbers were on every copy, (those tracing papery things with the carbon)

I thought they blanked out the numbers in case you lost the slip.
