Hi,
Would someone be able to give some some help/advice. I have quite a modern fast computer, ACER Aspire 5738, 4GB Mem, Core 2 Duo T6600 processor, windows 7 64bit.
It seems to be running very slowly and has been for some time. It isnt fill with lots of stuff, and I rarely run multiple programmes at any one time. When I open windows task manager and look at the performance, whilst writing this and this being the only window open, my memory is running at 3.56 GB and physical memory 93% !! CPU usage fluctuating between 70-80%. Im not computer whizz but I pretty sure that isnt normal.
Yesterday I cleared all my cache and cookies and defraged it, but I do this quite regularly anyway. I have avast antivirus and regularly scan with Ad-aware
Finally, when I go to shut down my PC, it says that AEM Capturing window is preventing windows from shutting down, could this be slowing down my machine? I think that has something to do with the graphics card which is an ATI Radeon (HD 4570 Graphics 512MB)
Thank you for you time

disable windows defender realtime scanning, uninstall ad-aware
post a hijackthis log, and do a full scan with malwarebytes, fix anything found before closing
clearing caches and defragging doesn't speed it up
unless you have a runaway process/memory leak, most of the ram will be used for cacheing, process explorer will tell you the commit charge!!

scan and fix with this
http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe
and
http://www.malwarebytes.org/StartUpLite.exe
uninstall adaware
full scan with malwarebytes.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Click the java icon in control panel, updates, untick check for updates!!

I scanned with the kaspersky and it came up with nothing.
I have removed ad-aware
Scanned with malwarebytes, full scan which came up with nothing
I cannot find the java icon on the control panel or in any of the menu's?
(apologies if I am being dense)
(Everything is still running high at this point)0 -
which process is running high?
have you had an infection recently?
have you got the means to backup data, and do a factory restore using erecovery?
have you created the recovery disc?
is it still slow if you run it on mains, without the battery in?
try scanning with this
http://devbuilds.kaspersky-labs.com/devbuilds/AVPTool/!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
When I open windows task manager on the processes tab, there isnt anything running high, windows task manager, google flashing between 01 & 02.
On the performance tab, the physical memory is running at around 85%, around 3.5GB, CPU usage around 50-55%.
I havent had any viruses in a long time, if ever on this PC, had it just over a year.
Everything is generally slow, opening web pages, programmes like office etc
I will do a factory reset as I do have a recovery disc and see what happens.
Thanks for all your help, Il up date you on how it goes0 -
Is it slow without the battery in?
There is an entry in your log, which suggests a rootkit infection, which is why I suggested tdss, kaspersky avptool or avast rootkit scan may find it
You can use the factory restore partition, which is easier, usually ALT F10 at boot, or from erecovery - obviously you will lose your data if you do this!!

To speed your PC
1.Disable backgroung programs that you dont need. To view them start msconfig (Click on the Windows 7 start icon and type MSCONFIG in the search box and then either press enter), click on the Startup tab. Some startup programs are absolutely necessary, others are simply a waste of RAM ,so be careful.
2. Delete all the System Restore points except the recent one.
* Click Start, type CLEANMGR in the search box and press Enter
* Select the hard disk partition (C://) and press OK
* At the top of the dialog, click the tab More Options
* Under System Restore section, click the button "Clean up..."
Warning! Now you will have only one restore point (the most recent one)
3 You can disable animations
Click the Start button, selecting "Control Panel" > select "System" >Advanced system settings" >The "System Properties" multi-tabbed dialog box appears. Click the "Advanced" tab > "Performance", click the "Settings" button.
The "Performance Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears. Make sure the "Visual Effects" tab is selected.Click the "Custom" radio button if it is not already selected, then uncheck "Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing".0
