How many runner bean plants in a 40cm square pot? And what else with cucs? Pic.
As title really.
I'm about to plant my runner bean plants in their last position so is it one per pot or can I get 2 in there?
Edit: Also needed to ask...what else could I stick in with my cucumbers? I found a site that said to put the plants 12 inches apart, which I've done but there still seems a lot of room left to me. Can I put anything else in there too? The cucumbers will be growing up the trellis hopefully, rather than left to wander over the ground.

I would of say more depending on variety, about 3-4 plant per pot with canes in a wigwam.0

i'd show a few lettuces or low lying things to go in the front.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000

in rich soil in a patch that size I would put 5"enough is a feast"...old Buddist proverb0

Radishes. They are supposedly beneficial to cucumbers. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0

thats a very pretty set up for 3 tiny plants:eek::rotfl:
I am guessing they grow huge as not planted any myself before:o- i would probably have filled the pot and then had a big tangled useless mess:rotfl:***MSE...My.Special.Escape***0 -

Which is exactly why I asked. :rotfl:
I tend to make it up as I go along usually but this gardening lark has got me now so I'd like to do things as best as I can iyswim.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Runner beans, you can stick one in every 20cm apart if and only if, you have decent soil, or garden compost in the pot, not multipurpose compost which won't have the legs for it. Which means you can fit in 8 per pot. If you have MP compost then put in 4.
I wouldn't put anything else with the cucs, but I would cover the bed with cardboard to stop moisture loss. But pull it up now and again to check for slugs.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

I got bags of manure (Bowers, I think) and Miracle Grow Veg compost. Put some manure at the bottom and then mixed it in the ratio as advised on the back of the bag. Hopefully that should be ok for the plants. I didn't buy any cheap or poor quality stuff at all as I remember reading how important the soil was for growth.
I hadn't got a clue what I was doing so I only put one in the pot last night. :rotfl: Will pot up some others today.
I've got some mulch sheets somewhere, I could cut a piece of that for the cucumber bed and just weigh it down with a stone or two. That would do the same job? So much more neater and will blend it with the bed. :rotfl:
Thanks.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Mulch sheet would do the same job. Whatever mulch sheet is :rotfl:
Stick some of it in the middle of the bean pot as well, they really like moist roots.
That's a very good tip actually, whenever beans are planted in a circle or row, stick as much cardboard down as possible in the middle, it keeps weeds away and keeps the soil nicely moist. It really works well.
I think I read it, or saw it somewhere years ago and I've done it ever since. Makes a big difference.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
These cucumbers are incredibly tiny to be planted out, surely? I'd be waiting till they were at least six inches or so tall, with at least two pairs of fully developed main leaves. You'd better give them a bit of shelter...you can make bell cloches out of 1.5L fizzy drinks bottles with the base cut off. Leave the cap off too and stick a cane down the opening into the soil near the side of the bottle. Water onto the cane and the water will run down into the soil rather than flattening the tiny plant.
You'll need to help the cucumber plants climb by tying them in as they grow. Otherwise they'll head straight for where there's best light..the front of the bed!
And put some slug pellets down asap. Baby plants, nom nom. They won't last a week like that.
As to the beans, 4 to a pot that size. Remember the canes. Put the canes in the four corners and the beans just inside the canes. It's better to make a square frame at the top to support the canes than bunch them together. Gives the beans more support. You'll need tall canes for runners...about 5 feet tall minimum, so make sure the pots are held down well at the base otherwise the wind will topple them when the beans are fully grown. I would use a good layer of stones or even a brick in the base under the compost, for ballast, but you do need a deep pot if using a brick.Val.0
