Travel wedding box

Does anyone know where I can get a travel box for my wedding dress to take it abroad for cheap, or free! I have looked on ebay and they are around £20 plus postage, its just a box!! Has anyone any experience of taking a dress abroad, how big will it need to be, does it go in hold or as hand luggage etc!?! I will ask the airline and wedding co-ordinator when I speak to them but forarmed is forwarned dont they say!? Thanks in advance!

I would speak to your airline - and be prepared to have it as hand luggage in a good quality suit / dress carrier, not a box. I've seen a few being taken onto planes & they have all been in the cabin with the passengers.

    Have you contacted your airline?

When we looked at getting married abroad and most travel companies offered a free travel box for your dress

    Hi,

Where are you traveling too ?

I Got married on April 21st in Florida and Bought a Box, Not a very posh one compared to some but it did the job !

I found it really easy to use. I was going to use a small suitcase but then talked my OH into letting me get one, I wanted everyone to know I was getting married ! LOL

I got it off Ebay I think I payed about 25 pounds to have it delivered.

It really depends on the size of your dress when it is packed as to if its hold or hand luggage....and it can even vary accoring to the space on the plane within the cabin and the check in/cabin crew involved...

Your dress should ideally be carefully packed and labelled as hold luggage...if you pack it with that intention then its a bonus if it ends up travelling in the cabin with you...

If it goes in the hold it will be treated the same way as the oversize and special items so it wont be with the general luggage...special items are usually checked in with other luggage as part of your allowance and then you may be asked to drop it off at a designated point where it will be loaded onto the plane seperately...

The box that you pack it in needs to be fairly robust....a hanging suitcase cover is'nt really advisable IMO...the ones sold on ebay are good but if you have access to another form of box then thats fine too ....remember if you buy a box then its got a home to live in afterwards so it solves a storage issue or if you are looking to sell your dress afterwards then the packaging to send it has been provided....a lot depends on the nature of your dress...and how big it is...sometimes they will fold easily into a small hand luggage or suitcase but not all dresses will do that....

    Hi,

I'm thinking of getting one of these if I take it as hand luggage
    http://www.dressinabox.co.uk/index.htm

We have just boooked our holiday to go with the wedding & it says this on their website - Wedding dresses and other such important accessories should be packed suitably for loading into the aircraft hold. No excess baggage charged, however, they need to contact Thomas Cook Airlines directly.

Our flight is a Thomson flight so they have told me to ring them but said the same applies! If I do put it in the hold i'd like to do it like they do the pushchaires you put it on at the last min & take it off on arrival.

I think the best thing is to contact your tour operator.

I would of never packed my dress in the hold.

If you look on Ebay there are boxes that will take even the biggest dresses.

This is the link for the shop on Ebay for the box I got. She tells you which airlines and their sizes for taking as hand luggage.

Imagine if you pack it in the hold and it goes missing , I would of been gutted, I would advise taking it as hand luggage if you can .

    I'm going with Thomson.

I got a letter from them saying that as the bride i get an extra 5k luggage allowance for my dress. It then goes on to say that it must be xcm wide by ycm long etc and should be able to fit in an overhead compartment. Yet, when i speak to the agents in the thomson shop, they insist that the extra 5k luggage allowance is in the hold. This makes no sense to me.

So, i will NOT be putting my dress in the hold, not on your nelly. Even if i have to put my purse etc in h2bs hand luggage bag so that my dress is my only thing, i'm still not putting it in the hold. I've seen the way they throw luggage about.
