I can say yes they are recorded as I used a recording to help back up an overpayment mistake by them, it can take a while to get the recording on CD, mine took 8 weeks but in the end it was this and my stating the times in the recording to back up my claim that meant I won the appeal of the appeal.

Absolutely all calls are recorded for precisely this reason! It protects HMRC as well as the Customer.

dont think it matters as they will have sent her an award notice with £8,000 as her income and you have to check it and inform them of any errors. Even if she did say £28,000 she should have checked the notice

I bet this was one of those calls where you agree to the claim and its a so called recorded signature, always always do things in writing and check everything............

That's why they send you a coding notice through the post - precisely so you can check the details. They get you to agree that all your information is correct over the phone so that they can start processing immediately to reduce delays in payment. But once you get the notice you are supposed to check it so you can contact them with any errors the same with pretty much every benefit where you can apply over the phone.
