where does it say that it is only valid for 1 year,I have got an Enhanced disclosure for over 18 months now and I have used 3 times to apply for Jobs

I have 2 current CRB checks, and am awaiting on 3 more (!), as just joined some agencies. Did you get any of the 3 jobs you applied for? as in my experience a new job requires a new CRB check. Certainly been like that for my last 2 jobs. They wouldn't even let people start without a new one.

I was under the impression that they lastd 1 year, but at the discresion of employers they could be kept for 3 years if in the same employment.

Very silly set up. Why do I need 5 CRB checks to prove I'm ok? The only people who benefit are the CRB people who charge £38 a time. At the moment I am having to wait 4-6 weeks till I can work despite having valid checks!!!

If you are working in the Departmnet of Health you can (in limited circumstances) go for a "POVAFirst check"

The liability is with your new employer so a check is carried out each and everytime. Changes have been proposed so that the CRB is done (in the case of schools) by the LEA and is valid for a year within the LEA.

Wait until you apply for a security clearance - they can delve into any aspect of your (your partners, parents and close associates) life for no reason other than suspecting you of being a subversive.......
  • If you think about it, even if not the case, it would be good to have annual CRB checks as circumstances can and do change. Otherwise, it would be easier for someone with a conviction in say, assualt, to continue working with vulnerable adults/children and in theory be a potential risk....
I just hope your CRB comes through quicker than other's i know have experienced (3months waiting to start a job with no pay! harsh)

you may have valid checks but the employer doesn't know if you have commited a offence in the period from your last check. If things went wrong they are the ones liable for employing you.
  • If it's working in a kids club, it will be an enhanced CRB which would show ALL criminal convictions and cautions even if spent.
It will show no ccj's or any financial information.
I have had 2 this year due to starting new jobs, they used to be valid for 1 year but now you have to apply for a new one for every new job.

It doesn't show spent convictions and mine has lasted three years so far.

You mean that when I was 11 years old and got a caution for ripping a bus seat with a mysterious knife that I APPARENTLY had that looked mysteriously like a child's finger, that'll be on my CRB?

The bus company was prosecuted a few months later by the Police for fiddling MOTs and tax discs, strange that... Me thinks they upset the Duty Seageant somehow...
well my caution shows on my one, but mine is an enhanced CRB so it must show everything.

I have never had to have these done. I have been in my current job 20yrs and these are relatively new. However I am sure that they only cost £10 in Scotland from your local Police force. For that you get a dual check which checks both the Police National Computer and the Scottish Criminal Records.
