plug-hole mastic

Can anyone advise is there a special mastic/compound to use that makes the waste outlet fitting (plug hole) in a basin water tight?

I have a leaking hand basin that needs repair.

    thanks plumb1.

I plan to swap a hardly-used identical basin in the cloakroom with the en-suite leaking basin. To avoid soldering the water pipes I thought about those flexible hose fittings about 6" long with compression fittings and a stop valve at one end. Sound OK??
