Europcar car hire problem - GRRRR!

We're currently sat at Limoge airport , Sunday afternoon, waiting for some French girl to return to the Europcar hir desk (even though she should be there now). We have been waiting for 2 hours already, she isn't due to return for another hour - apparently she's 'gone to look after her children' for a bit an no-one can contact her.

The problem? We arranged to pick up a car at 11.00am, when we got here she'd just left but luckily the girl at the other desk had her mobile number and contacted her to return. She returned 10 minutes later, we completed the paperwork, she gave us a number to call if there were any prpolems - including any undocumented damage to the car. She then left in a hurry.

We went to the car, checked it - there is some undocumented damage but worse than that the insurance/tax disk is out of date by more than a year! We called the number - no response. We returned the office - now all locked up apart from a security guard who agreed with us that we should not drive the car with an out of date insurance sticker in the windscreen. We have tried calling europcar in France and England - both are closed on a Sunday and no ability to leave an answerphone message. Another guy told us it was OK to drive, but would you beleive some random guy? Looking online the penalty is $7000 Euro's and the driver is responsible. Have dealt with Franch police before I can just imagine them holding me fully responsible if we were stopped.

The next flight lands in an hour so she'll be here then, and there will be a HUGE complaint heading to Europcar for the slack service. In the meantime whilst trying to find a contact for Europcar on the internet I have come across countless issues and problems people have had with this company abroad.

If this can serve as a warning for anyone I hope it does some good. Make sure the person hiring the car to you is present when you go to collect the car. Our journey is now delayed by 4 hours and we have a 4-5 hour drive ahead of us. If anyone has an issue with Europcar in future the UK number for the head of customer services (i.e not some minion on minimum wage answering an 0845 number) is 01923 811340 though not open on a Sunday.

I will update this thread in due course, and meanwhile hope anyone searching for Europcar problems on google will come across this thread. The more issues like this are made public the more the company might actually book up their ideas.
