New car insurance but have only been named driver!

Options
Hi,
For all my driving years (44) the car documents/insurance has been in my husbands name with me as a named driver. I now need to obtain car insurance in my own name so effectively starting from scratch. Does anyone know of any insurance companies who take named drivers into consideration? I have done an extensive search of comparison sites and the question of named drivers appears very little. In the time frame mentioned above, there have been no claims and or convictions (hope I haven't spoken too soon)!!!! and I would add that I have been the main driver really. Any snippets of info greatfully received. - Sally

Your best hope is speaking to a broker and explaning you've had 44 years driving experience as a ND... any intro offers they can give you etc

Or contact the company that holds your OH's insurance policy, they can see you have a good record and may give better than average Intro Discount.

The customer service/sales rep may not be helpfull. Ask for the underwriting department, they calculate risks and therefore will beable to give you the best offer.
  • I had the same problem. I went to Chaucer Direct.

They asked for the renewal which showed me as a named driver and gave me full NCD.

Was in a similar situation about 5 years ago.

We went from being a two car family to a one car family about 12 years ago. Both of us had full (5+ yrs NCD). We insured that one car in my wife's name, thus I lost my NCD history as a result of the seven year gap. When we bought a second car again in 2006, we transferred the NCD to my name and I insured the new car (this is allowed, you can freely transfer NCD between husband and wife if both have been named on the policy). Then we looked for a new policy with no NCD for my wife on the old car. We did it this way because we planned to make very little use of the old car so could keep the premium down with a low milage limit (<4k per annum). But a number of insurers then offered very good introductory discounts to my wife because of here recent insurance history, we settled for Tesco who gave a 3yr NCD as intro discount at the time.

Nothing underhand here, we made it very clear to Tesco that the NCD had been used elsewhere and that she was taking out this new policy with no NCD to offer.

I mention this because I wonder if you might also find you get a better deal overall by transferring your OH's NCD to you for your new policy, and then he looks for a new policy with a good intro discount because of his good history/circumstances.

    Good luck

Is there any possibility that you can speak to the insurer who covers your Husband on the car at the min?

There is a chance that they will allow your Husband to transfer the NCB over to you. All it would take is one phone call to find out.

My Husband was the policy holder and main driver and I was the named driver. It had been this way for 7 years. Like yourself , it became obvious that I was actually driving the car more often that he was and so I thought to keep things "legal" I should inform the insurance company.

With my Husbands consent they allowed me to take over the complete 7 years NCB which was excellent!

I dont know the full circumstances of your situation or whether your Husband is in a position to sign the NCB over to you but it is certainly worth asking!
The loopy one has gone :j

Well since underwriters aren't licensed to speak to customers that's quite worrying...

I've worked for 3 insurance companies and a broker with a panel of 30+ insurers and know friends that work for various other insurers and they've never had the UW department speak to a customer.

    Hi,
Many thanks to all who have replied. I think I've pressed the thanks button for everyone.
The problem is about transferring the NCD if it were possible, is the fact that we have just got a second car and the NCD is going to go onto the newly acquired car, hence I find myself in the position of obtaining car insurance in my name, once I change the Policy Documents into my name. We did have two cars some time ago and of course the two vehicles earned their own NCD but I understand that after a lapse of time this would no longer be applied. Sally
