Cheap Home Phones Newbie Question

Hi

I'm moving house soon so have a chance to re-do all my utilities from scratch.

One thing that should be obvious, but somehow I can't figure it out, is are the deals described here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/home-phone-calls

Only available to people who already have a BT line? i.e. I'll take on the house with whatever the previous owner has installed already (lets say for the sake or argument it's BT). The advice in the article on the main site is abut switching from BT, so does one need to sign up with BT first, then switch to get a better deal?

How do you go "straight to" a provider like Primus?

While I'm at it, does anyone have any good or bad experiences with Primus they want to share with me? Or any other recommendations?

cheers

Any company offering line rental should be able to do what you want.

Many lie and say it's not possible though (too much trouble and cost to them administratively).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Beware though that when you sign up to BT you agree a 12 month contract there is a penalty for leaving early set at around £2 per month on the Free Weekend call package. Higher amounts charged for the other call packages.

Some providers will install a line for you, not sure Primus will though.
