speakers on my lptop not working?

Hi Everyone,

I recently bought a headset to use with skype and ever since using it for the first time the sound on my laptop has stopped working. I can only hear things if I plug in speakers or the headset. I have checked that the volume is as load as possible and when I hover on the little speaker icon in the bottom right corner it shows its working as "Speakers/headphone IDT High Definition Audio Codec"

What does that mean?

Thanks!

Hi, it could be that you have damaged the headphone socket so that the 'flimsy' switch on it is now not returning to the default position.

If you click start, control panel, sounds, on the playback tab, is it set to speakers, some cards differentiate between headphones and speakers

Right click speaker at bottom. Select play back devices, check to see if speaker is set to default.

Hmm... I think mine doesn't differentiate between the speakers and the headphones.

How do i see if it is set to default? Do you mean is it ticked? Then yes it is.

But hey presto... it seems to be working - I think Keith's suggestion was correct, once I plugged in the speakers and removed them again, they seem to work again.

    Thanks guys!
